Blue Swords
Blue Swords (german: Pokal der Blauen Schwerter) is an international figure skating competition organized by the Deutsche Eislauf-Union. It is usually held in Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. Medals are awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. Champions of the event win the "Blue Swords Trophy". History Blue Swords began as a senior international competition in East Germany, and was held annually between 1961 and 1998. In 1985, it became a junior-level event. Valery Ivanovich Meshkov (russian: Валерий Иванович Мешков; born 9 August 1945) is a former figure skater who competed for the Soviet Union. He is the 1964 Winter Universiade bronze medalist and a four-time Soviet national champion. His best ISU Championship result, seventh, came at the 1963 Europeans in Budapest, Hungary. Günter Anderl
Günter Anderl (11 January 1947 – 10 October 2015) was an Austrian figure skater who competed in men's singles. He was the 1968 Winter Universiade bronze medalist, 1969 Nebelhorn Trophy champion, and a three-time Austrian national champion (1969–1971). He competed at two Winter Olympics, in 1968 and 1972. Personal life Anderl was born on 11 January 1947 in Vienna, Austria. He died in Vienna on 10 October 2015. Career Anderl won the junior gold medal at the inaugural Nebelhorn Trophy, in 1962. In February 1968, he competed at his first Winter Olympics; he ranked 20th in compulsory figures, 23rd in the free skate, and 23rd overall in Grenoble, France. In the same year, he won the bronze medal at the Winter Universiade in Innsbruck, Austria. Anderl won the senior men's title at the Nebelhorn Trophy in 1969. The 1967 Blue Swords (german: Pokal der Blauen Schwerter) was an international senior-level figure skating competition organized in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating and ice dancing. East Germany's Günter Zöller outscored the Soviet Union's Vladimir Kurenbin for gold in the man's category. East Germans swept the ladies' podium, led by Beate Richter, who won her first gold medal at the event after three previous podium results. Reinhard Ketterer
Reinhard E. Ketterer (born 1948 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) is a German retired competitive figure skater who competed for West Germany as a single skater and pair skater. As a single skater, he is the 1969 German national champion, and as a pair skater, he is the 1972 German bronze medalist with partner Gabriele Cieplik. He is still a figure skating coach. Career Reinhard E. Ketterer started figure skating at the club SC Riessersee in 1956 after the 1956 World Figure Skating Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. His first coach was Sepp Schönmetzler Senior, the father of former German Champion Sepp Schönmetzler. Later Reinhard Ketterer was coached by Erich Zeller. Günter Zöller
Günter Zöller (born 21 May 1948) is a German figure skating coach and former competitor for East Germany. He is the 1970 World bronze medalist, the 1970 European bronze medalist, a five-time Blue Swords champion, and a five-time East German national champion. Personal life Günter Zöller was born 21 May 1948 in Chemnitz. Career Zöller began figure skating as a child. Coached by Jutta Müller, he represented the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and East Germany. Zöller debuted at the European Championships in 1963 and finished 19th. In 1965, he won his first East German national title and was sent to the 1965 European Championships, where he placed 12th. He then competed at his first World Championships, placing 18th. In 1967, after winning his second national title, Zöller advanced to seventh at Europeans and 11th at Worlds. Ondrej Nepela
Ondrej Nepela (22 January 1951 – 2 February 1989) was a Slovak figure skater who represented Czechoslovakia. He was the 1972 Olympic champion, a three-time World champion (1971–73), and a five-time European champion (1969–73). Later in his career, he performed professionally and became a coach. Early life Nepela was born on 22 January 1951 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. His mother, a housewife and seamstress, and father, a chauffeur, were from central Slovakia. Career Nepela became interested in skating after watching the 1958 European Championships on television — Karol Divín won the men's title for Czechoslovakia. In February 1958, his mother brought the seven-year-old to a Bratislava ice rink. After two weeks, she approached Hilda Múdra to complain that her son was being ignored by the instructors and Múdra agreed to teach him. She described him as a diligent and punctual student.
