Bloemfontein, ( ; , "fountain of flowers") also known as Bloem, is one of South Africa's three capital cities and the capital of the Free State province. It serves as the country's judicial capital, along with legislative capital Cape Town and administrative capital Pretoria. Bloemfontein is the seventh-largest city in South Africa. Situated at an elevation of above sea level, the city is home to approximately 520,000 residents and forms part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality which has a population of 747,431. It was one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The city of Bloemfontein hosts the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, the Franklin Game Reserve, Naval Hill, the Maselspoort Resort and the Sand du Plessis Theatre. Free State (province)
The Free State, known as Orange Free State until the 28th of June 1995 when its name was changed, is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bloemfontein, which is also South Africa's judicial capital. Its historical origins lie in the Boer republic called the Orange Free State and later Orange Free State Province. Bloemfontein City Hall
Bloemfontein City Hall ( af, ''Stadhuis van Bloemfontein'' or ''Bloemfontein-stadsaal'', italic=unset) is a historic building in Bloemfontein which houses the local city council. The building was completed in 1936 and burned by vandals in 2017. History Construction work started in 1934 and were completed in 1936. The building was designed by architect Gordon Leith. During the 1980s, new municipal offices were opened alongside the building. Even after municipal government changes in 2000 and its 2011 reclassification, the local government has continued to use the town hall. On June 21, 2017, vandals set the building on fire. The fire was lit during a protest by the South African Municipal Workers' Union held at the building earlier during the day. The municipal archives in the building were lost in the fire. The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), formerly known as the Appellate Division, is an appellate court in South Africa. It is located in Bloemfontein, the "judicial capital" of South Africa. Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality which governs Bloemfontein and surrounding towns in the Free State province of South Africa. Mangaung is a Sesotho name meaning "place of cheetahs", as it was not uncommon for the Basotho to name warrior regiments after ferocious animals. The National Afrikaans Literary Museum and Research Centre ( af, Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum en Navorsingsentrum, NALN) is a central archive for material and information on the history, development, and scope of literature, music, and drama in the Afrikaans language.
