Batısandal
Batısandal (meaning "west sandalwood" named after Santalum album, a common tree) is a neighbourhood in the municipality and district of Erdemli, Mersin Province, Turkey. Its population is 744 (2022). It is situated in the hilly region to the south of the Taurus Mountains. It is a dispersed settlement about north west of Erdemli and west of Mersin. The village was founded by a Oghuz Turk, Turkmen clan from Central Asia. Initially named ''Kelete'', it was administratively included in Limonlu. In 1929, it was declared a village. There are historical ruins around the village such as an archaeological site (named ''Öküzlü ruins, Öküzlü''), a church and Ottoman Empire, Ottoman tombstones from the early 19th century. Öküzlü Ruins
Öküzlü is an archaeological site in Mersin Province, Turkey. Geography Öküzlü (''Öküzlüklü'') is situated in the rural area of Erdemli district which is rich in archaeological ruins. It is close to Batısandal village at about . There are many ruins around Öküzlü . Kanlıdivane and Elaiussa Sebaste are to the south, Emirzeli is to the west, Tapureli ruins are to the north of Öküzlü. Highway distance to the coastal town of Ayaş on Turkish state highway is . Öküzlü is also accessible from Limonlu (Lamos of the antiquity). Its distance to Erdemli is and to Mersin is . History The original name of the site is not known. Turkish name Öküzlü (literally "with ox") refers to reliefs of oxen on column heads (now in Mersin Museum).
