Baronet Of Nova Scotia
This is a list of baronetcies in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. These were first created in 1624, and were replaced by the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1707. This page lists baronetcies, whether extant, extinct, dormant (D), unproven (U), under review (R), abeyant, or forfeit, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. The holders of some of the baronetcies listed on the list have died but in each case, up to the present, no person has proved succession and thus been placed upon the Official Roll of the Baronetage. Those that are marked with a "Dormant" in the penultimate column are regarded as being dormant since, although heirs are known to exist, succession has not been proved within a period of five years from the death of the holder. A baronetcy becomes extinct when heirs cannot be traced and are believed not to exist. Baird Baronets
There have been four baronetcies created for persons with the surname Baird, two in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and two in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Overview The first Baird Baronetcy of Newbyth in the County of Haddington, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 4 February 1680 for William Baird, 1654-1737, son of Lord Sir John Baird, 1620-1698. Lord William Baird sat as Member of Parliament for Midlothian and was registered an Advocate and later made Lord of Session. The title became extinct in 1745 on the death of his son Sir John Baird, 2nd Bt. While the baronetcy failed, the Newbyth estate passed to his cousin William Baird of the Saughtonhall branch of the family. Viscount Mayo
Viscount Mayo is a title that has been created twice in the Peerage of Ireland, both times for members of the Bourke family. The first creation came in 1627 in favour of Tiobóid na Long Bourke, also known as Theobald Bourke. He was the son of Sir Richard Bourke, 18th lord of Mac William Iochtar (Lower Mac William), and Gráinne O'Malley. Miles, the 2nd Viscount, was created a baronet in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in c. 1638. His son Theobald, the third Viscount, was also created a Baronet in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in c. 1638 (although there are no records of this creation in the Great Seal). The third Viscount was executed in 1652 after being found guilty of murder by Cromwell's High Court of Justice in Connaught. Bolles Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created people named Bolles, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. The Bolles Baronetcy, of Scampton in the County of Lincolnshire, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 24 July 1628 for John Bolles, son of Sir George Bolles, Lord Mayor of London and High Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1627. The second Baronet was Member of Parliament for Lincoln from 1661 to 1663. The fourth Baronet followed his example from 1690 to 1702. The title became extinct on the latter's death in 1714. Earl of Lucan is a title which has been created twice in the Peerage of Ireland for related families. History Patrick Sarsfield was one of the senior commanders of James VII & II (deposed in 1688) in battles in Ireland with William of Orange which determined the latter's takeover with his co-regnant wife, Mary II of England, of the English, Scottish and Irish thrones (the Glorious Revolution and First Jacobite Wars). In 1691, the deposed King James purportedly created him Earl of Lucan, Viscount of Tully and Baron Rosberry. Like all post deposition titles they have no recognition in UK law. In 1795, the first legal creation of title was for Sarsfield's similarly landowning great-nephew, Charles Bingham, 1st Baron Lucan. Bethune Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Bethune, one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Sharp, later Bethune Baronetcy, of Scotscraig in the County of Fife, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 21 April 1683 for William Sharp. The sixth Baronet married Margaret, daughter of John Bethune. The baronetcy became dormant on his death in 1780. It remained so until 1916 when it was successfully claimed by Alexander Sharp Bethune, the ninth Baronet, who had assumed the additional surname of Sharp.
