Antonio Azzopardi
Antonio Azzopardi (25 January 1805 – 23 January 1881) was the first Maltese free settler in Australia Personal life Azzopardi was born in Żejtun, Malta to merchant Angelo Azzopardi and his wife Euphemia Cachia and emigrated to Victoria on board the ''Mary Hay'' in 1839. He was a seaman for the first few years after his arrival and married Margaret Hannah Sandeman (1818-1912), from Perth, Scotland on 23 October 1845 at the Collins Street Melbourne Independent Congregational Church. He worked as a mail contractor and then a canvasser for the ''Melbourne Herald''. Later Azzopardi bought a printing press and became a printer. A settler is a person who has migrated to an area and established a permanent residence there, often to colonize the area. A settler who migrates to an area previously uninhabited or sparsely inhabited may be described as a pioneer. Maltese Australians are Australian citizens who are fully or partially of Maltese descent or Malta-born people who reside in Australia. While most of them emigrated to Australia from Malta, a number emigrated from the United Kingdom where they had settled after having been expelled from Egypt, as holders of British passports, during the Suez Crisis. According to the 2016 Census, there were 175,563 people of Maltese descent in Australia and 37,614 Malta-born people residing in the country at the moment of the census. History The first Maltese to arrive in Australia was possibly inmate John Pace in June 1790, though it is not clear if he was sent from Malta or if he was Maltese at all. The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. ''The Explorers and Early Colonists of Victoria'' is a historical photographic montage of 1872 by Thomas Foster Chuck (1826–1898). It consists of a framed collection of 713 photographs of the early settlers of Victoria. History The project took Chuck three years to complete. To be eligible for inclusion in the montage, the settler must have arrived in Victoria before 1843. To obtain the photos, Chuck photographed some of the surviving settlers, borrowed negatives of others and copied them and photographed portraits and paintings of the more famous.
