Andreas Miaoulis
Andreas Vokos, better known by his nickname Miaoulis ( el, Ανδρέας Βώκος Μιαούλης; 1765 – 24 June 1835), was a Greek revolutionary, admiral, and politician who commanded Greek naval forces during the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829). Biography Miaoulis was born on the island of Hydra (island), Hydra to an Arvanite family of Euboean origin, namely from the town of Fylla. He was known among his fellow islanders as a trader in corn who had gained wealth and made a popular use of his money. He had been a merchant captain, and was chosen to lead the naval forces of the islands when they rose against the Ottoman Empire, government of the Sultan. Miaoulis contributed in every way possible to the cause of the resistance against the Turks. He expended the money he had made from his wheat-shipping business during the Napoleonic Wars. Battle Of Nauplia (1822)
The Battle of Nauplia or ''Battle of Spetses'' was a series of naval engagements lasting from 8 to 13 September ( O.S.) 1822 in the Gulf of Nauplia (Argolic Gulf) between the Greek Fleet and the Ottoman Fleet during the Greek War of Independence. Although neither side sustained significant losses (according to general descriptions, it consisted in distant and ineffectual cannonade between the two fleets), the Ottomans withdrew after three failed attempts to break through the Greek fleet, and the battle is considered a Greek victory. Andreas Miaoulis (born 1819)
Andreas Miaoulis ( el, Ανδρέας Μιαούλης, 1819–1887) was a Greek naval officer, hailing from the distinguished Hydriot Miaoulis family. He was the son of Dimitrios Miaoulis and grandson of Andreas Miaoulis, the celebrated admiral of the Greek War of Independence. He was born in Hydra, then still part of the Ottoman Empire, in 1819. After Greece became independent, he joined the Royal Hellenic Navy as a lieutenant in 1836. He was very well versed in naval affairs, and enjoyed the friendship of King Otto, who kept him as the captain of his royal yacht. After Otto's ouster in 1862, he was transferred as naval attaché to the Ottoman capital, Constantinople, where he remained for several years. Following his return, he was responsible for the re-organization of the main Greek naval base at Salamis Island. Nikolaos Miaoulis (Greek: Νικόλαος Μιαούλης, 1818 - 1872) was a Greek navy personnel. He was the son of Andreas Miaoulis, a revolutionary leader and was a member of the Miaoulis family from Hydra. Athanasios Miaoulis ( el, Αθανάσιος Μιαούλης, 1815 – 7 June 1867) was a Greek military officer and Prime Minister of Greece. Born in Hydra in 1815 the son of the famous Greek admiral Andreas Miaoulis, from whom he learned his navigation skills. Biography He was the son of the Arvanite admiral Andreas Miaoulis. He was born in Hydra. In 1829 he was given a scholarship at the Bavarian War College in Munich by Ludwig of Bavaria. After his graduation he served in the Royal Navy, until his transfer to the Greek Navy three years later. Because of his fluency in English, he was appointed adjutant to king Otto of Greece. He was later elected as Hydra MP (September 25, 1855) and was appointed Minister for Naval Affairs in the government of Dimitrios Voulgaris. Antonios Miaoulis ( el, Αντώνιος Μιαούλης; 1800 – October 25, 1836) was a Greek politician and a revolutionary leader during the Greek War of Independence. Biography He was born on the island of Hydra and was the second son of the Hydriot admiral Andreas Miaoulis, a member of the historic Miaoulis family. He participated in many naval battles during the war, and when Otto of Bavaria became king, Antonios Miaoulis was appointed as his aide-de-camp. In this capacity he escorted Otto to Bavaria in 1836, where he was to be married to Amalia of Oldenburg. He died there on 25 October of cholera. Dimitrios Miaoulis ( el, Δημήτριος Μιαούλης, 1794 - 1836) was a Greek revolutionary leader. Biography He was born in Hydra in 1794 and was the first son of the naval leader Andreas Miaoulis who participated in the Greek War of Independence from the Historic Hydrian family of Miaoulis. He was educated into the navigation during his childhood years and with the outbreak of the revolution, he was the first to represent from all of his family. In April 1821, he was appointed by the community of Hydra as a fleet commander of the Hydrian boats which with the cooperation of Spetses ships sailed into the Gulf of Corinth in May. In September 1825 he headed for England for asking the protection of Greece from England in the model of the United States of the Ionian Islands.
