André Chamson
André Chamson (6 June 1900 – 9 November 1983) was a French archivist, novelist and essayist. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the father of the novelist . Biography Chamson was born at Nîmes, Gard. Having studied at the École des chartes, as an archiviste paléographe (graduation 1924), he was the founder-director of the journal ''Vendredi'' and a museum curator before the Second World War. In July 1937 he attended the Second International Writers' Congress, the purpose of which was to discuss the attitude of intellectuals to the war in Spain, held in Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid and attended by many writers including André Malraux, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Spender and Pablo Neruda. After the War he was on the editorial board of the magazine ''Europe'' at the time of its revival in 1946; he was a curator at the Musée du Petit Palais, and (from 1959 to 1971) director of the Archives de France. PEN International (known as International PEN until 2010) is a worldwide association of writers, founded in London in 1921 to promote friendship and intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere. The association has autonomous International PEN centers in over 100 countries. Other goals included: to emphasise the role of literature in the development of mutual understanding and world culture; to fight for freedom of expression; and to act as a powerful voice on behalf of writers harassed, imprisoned and sometimes killed for their views. Charles Langbridge Morgan
Charles Langbridge Morgan (22 January 1894 – 6 February 1958) was a British playwright and novelist of English and Welsh parentage. The main themes of his work were, as he himself put it, "Art, Love, and Death", and the relation between them. Musée Du Désert
Le Musée du Désert is a museum dedicated to the history of Protestantism in France, particularly in the Cévennes. Its name refers to the ''Désert'', the period between the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the Edict of Versailles (1685–1787) during which Protestantism was illegal in France. The museum, formerly the house of the Camisard leader, Roland Laporte, is situated at Mas Soubeyran, in the commune of Mialet, ''département'' Gard, not far from Alès and Nîmes. Amid typically Cévenol settings, it presents documents and artifacts of the period, such as the preaching chairs used by the pastors, designed to be easily hidden and transported. It is open from March 1 to November 30. Cévennes
The Cévennes ( , ; oc, Cevenas) is a cultural region and range of mountains in south-central France, on the south-east edge of the Massif Central. It covers parts of the ''départements'' of Ardèche, Gard, Hérault and Lozère. Rich in geographical, natural, and cultural significance, portions of the region are protected within the Cévennes National Park, the Cévennes Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO), as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Causses and the Cévennes, Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscape. The area has been inhabited since 400,000 BCE and has numerous megaliths which were erected beginning around 2500 BCE. As an agriculturally-rich area, but not a suitable location for cities, the Cévennes developed a wide diversity of pastoral systems, including transhumance. Ernest Seillière
The Baron Ernest-Antoine Seillière (1 January 1866 – 15 March 1955) was a French writer, journalist and critic. Biography Seillière was born in Paris, the son of Aimé Seillière and Marie de Laborde. He studied at the École polytechnique. He was elected a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1914. Aged 80, Seillière was (with Jean Tharaud, René Grousset, Octave Aubry and Robert d'Harcourt) one of the five members of the Académie française elected on 1 February 1946, to replace the many vacancies left by the Nazi occupation of Europe. Georges Duhamel
Georges Duhamel (; ; 30 June 1884 – 13 April 1966) was a French author, born in Paris. Duhamel trained as a doctor, and during World War I was attached to the French Army. In 1920, he published '' Confession de minuit'', the first of a series featuring the anti-hero Salavin. In 1935, he was elected as a member of the Académie française. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twenty-seven times. He was also the father of the musicologist and composer Antoine Duhamel.
