Amytis of Babylon (c. 630-565 BCE; Median: ; Ancient Greek: grc, Αμυτις, Amutis; la, Amytis) was a Queen consort of Ancient Babylon. She was the daughter of the Median king Cyaxares, and the wife of Nebuchadnezzar II. Name The female name is the Latinised form of the Greek name (), which perhaps may reflect (with vowel metathesis) an original Median name , meaning "having good thought," and which is an equivalent of the Avestan term (). Life Amytis was the daughter of Cyaxares, and the sister of Astyages. Amytis had a niece, also named Amytis, from her brother Astyages. Amytis married Nebuchadnezzar to formalize the alliance between the Babylonian and Median dynasties. She was the daughter of the Median king Astyages, and the wife of Cyrus II. Life Amytis was the daughter of the Median king Astyages. Amytis had a paternal aunt, also named Amytis, who the sister Astyages and was married to the king Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. Amytis was married to Spitamas, who was a Median grandee and the prospective successor of Astyages. After Astyages was overthrown by Persian Cyrus, who was his own grandson through his daughter Mandane, and therefore was the nephew of Amytis, Cyrus killed Spitamas and married Amytis to legitimise his rule. Amytis "Amy" Towfighi is Professor of Neurology, Director of Neurological Services and Innovation for Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and Chief of Neurology and Associate Medical Director of Neurological Services at LAC+USC Medical Center. Towfighi received her B.S. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, and completed her internship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and residency at the Harvard Partners Neurology Program ( Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital). She also completed her fellowship in Vascular Neurology at University of California, Los Angeles and currently is a faculty member at Keck School of Medicine of USC.
