Amblycipitidae
The Amblycipitidae are a family of catfishes, commonly known as torrent catfishes. It includes three genus, genera, ''Amblyceps'', ''Liobagrus'', and ''Xiurenbagrus'', and about 36 species. Taxonomy The family Amblycipitidae is a monophyly, monophyletic group containing four monophyletic genera, ''Amblyceps'', ''Liobagrus'', ''Nahangbagrus'' and ''Xiurenbagrus''. It is the most basal (phylogenetics), basal Sisoroidea, sisoroid family and is cladistics, sister to a clade formed by the remaining families. The genera ''Amblyceps'' and ''Liobagrus'' are a sister group pair that is, in turn, sister to ''Xiurenbagrus''. Distribution and habitat These kinds of fishes can be found in swift freshwater streams in southern and eastern Asia, including Pakistan across northern India to Malaysia, China, Korea, and Japan. ''Liobagrus'' is a genus of catfishes of the family Amblycipitidae. ''Liobagrus'' fishes are distributed in the Yangtze River basin, Taiwan, Japan, and the Korea Peninsula. The adipose fin of these fishes is a confluent with the caudal fin. The nostrils are far apart, unlike those found in ''Amblyceps''. Most ''Liobagrus'' species grow to about 100 millimetres (3.94 in) SL. Taxonomy No shared derived characteristic has been found to diagnose the genus ''Liobagrus''. Catfish
Catfish (or catfishes; order Siluriformes or Nematognathi) are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Sisoroidea
Sisoroidea is a superfamily of catfishes ( order Siluriformes). It contains the four families Amblycipitidae, Akysidae, Sisoridae, and Erethistidae; many sources also include Aspredinidae. With Aspredinidae, this superfamily includes about 42 genera and 230 species. Taxonomy Sisoroidea is sister to the Loricarioidea. The monophyly of this superfamily is supported by a number of morphological characters. Amblycipitidae is the most basal family and is sister to the remaining families. Based on morphological data, Erethistidae is the sister group to Aspredinidae, with Sisoridae being the sister group of the clade formed by these two families. ''Fishes of the World'' by the American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson (1937–2011) is a standard reference for fish systematics. Now in its fifth edition (2016), the work is a comprehensive overview of the diversity and classification of the 30,000-plus fish species known to science. The book begins with a general overview of ichthyology, although it is not self-contained. After a short section on Chordata and non-fish taxa, the work lists all known fish families in a systematic fashion. Each family (biology), family gets at least one paragraph, and usually a body outline drawing; large families have subfamilies and tribes described as well.
