World Organization Of The Scout Movement
The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM ) is the largest international Scouting organization. WOSM has 173 members. These members are recognized national Scout organizations, which collectively have around 43 million participants. WOSM was established in 1922, and has its operational headquarters at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and its legal seat in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the counterpart of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). The WOSM's current stated mission is "to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Scout Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society". Jackson Dodds
Jackson Dodds, CBE (February 16, 1881 – April 7, 1961) was an early Scouts Canada Scouting notable, rising to Deputy Chief Scout for Canada. Born in Hornsey, Middlesex, England, Dodds first went to Canada in 1901, and finally settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after serving with the British Army in World War I. He served on the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1947 until 1949 and again from 1951 until 1955. Background Dodds was a strong swimmer and was on the Canadian national water polo team which competed in Saint Petersburg, Russia against the Russian team prior to their revolution. He was married to Florence Lydia Wood (1886-1949), a professional singer who sang under the name Roma. He was father to Roma, Donald, Stanley and Jean. Richard Francis "John" Thurman OBE JP (4 April 1911 – April 1985) was a British Scouting notable and Camp Chief of Gilwell Park from 1943 to 1969 and scouting’s first International Director of Adult Leader Training In 1943, he introduced the Gilwell woggle as the insignia for Basic Training. The woggle was first created in the early 1920s by Bill Shankley, a member of the Gilwell staff. He produced a two-strand Turk's head slide which was adopted as the official woggle. From 1943 to 1989, the Gilwell woggle was awarded on the completion of Basic Training, and the Gilwell scarf and the Wood Badge beads were awarded on the completion of Advanced Training. In 1962 Thurman conducted the only Wood Badge course ever in Burma. He was awarded the Bronze Wolf and the Silver Jay (Dutch scouts) in 1959 and the Silver Buffalo Award in 1962. William Durant Campbell
William Durant Campbell (March 18, 1907 – October 20, 1995) was a highly-decorated leader of the Scouting movement in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Campbell was born in Flint, Michigan, a grandson of William C. Durant, the founder of General Motors. He graduated from Princeton University in 1929, and first went into banking. After a few years, he became a field associate of the American Museum of Natural History and led six of their African expeditions in the 1930s. In 1937, he built Monte Carlo Ranch House in Kenya. Lt. Gen. Herman Franciscus Maria baron van Voorst tot Voorst (The Hague, 2 August 1886 - 9 July 1971) was a Dutch Army officer and politician. He was the son of Jan Joseph Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst Senior, and a younger brother of General Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst. In 1915, he married Felicia Maria baroness Schimmelpenninck van der Oye (1889-1952). He attended the Royal Military Academy in Breda and The Hague as well as the Cavalry School at Saumur. Salvador Fernández Beltrán D.J.C. (born at Matanzas, Cuba – 1987 in Venezuela) was among the first in the Americas to receive Wood Badge training, at Gilwell Park, England. He was the first to receive honorary appointment as Deputy Camp Chief of Gilwell. With this influence, the Scouts of Cuba began to use short trousers like those worn by the English. Fernandez Beltrán was known for his work within the Scouts of Cuba, but served World Scouting in several capacities. With the support of the Boy Scouts of America, he was appointed the International Bureau's Traveling Commissioner for Latin America in November 1947, the first professional Scout executive, whose operations center was first in Mexico and then in Cuba. Thomas Godfrey Polson Corbett, 2nd Baron Rowallan, (19 December 1895 – 30 November 1977), had a distinguished military career in the British Army and was Governor of Tasmania from 1959 to 1963. Olave St Clair Baden-Powell, Baroness Baden-Powell (''née'' Soames; 22 February 1889 – 25 June 1977) was the first Chief Guide for Britain and the wife of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting and co-founder of Girl Guides. She outlived her husband, who was 32 years her senior, by over 35 years. Lady Baden-Powell became Chief Guide for Britain in 1918.
