Alexander Library Building
The Alexander Library Building, is located in the Cultural Centre of Perth, Western Australia. It was named after Western Australian historian and former member of the Library Board, Fred Alexander. It houses the State Library of Western Australia, the J S Battye Library, and the State Records Office, in the Perth Cultural Precinct in Northbridge. The building falls under the responsibility of the Western Australian government Department of Culture and Arts. It was completed and opened in 1985. It has been changed internally over time, however the basic structure remains. Earlier landscape The sloped walkway just east of the building runs roughly along the alignment of the old Museum Street, which ran between James Street and Francis Street. State Library Of Western Australia
The State Library of Western Australia is a research, education, reference and public lending library located in the Perth Cultural Centre in Perth, Western Australia. It is a portfolio agency of the Western Australia Department of Culture and the Arts, and facilitated by the Library Board of Western Australia. The State Library has particular responsibility for collecting, preserving and digitising Western Australia's heritage materials. The Battye Library of West Australian History is the section of the Library dedicated to West Australian historical materials. The State Records Office of Western Australia (SRO) is the Western Australian government authority with responsibility for identifying, managing, preserving and providing access to the state's archives. The SRO also delivers best-practice records management services to state and local government agencies. The State Records Office operates under its own legislation, the State Records Act 2000, which was formally proclaimed in the Government Gazette on 30 November 2001. The Perth Cultural Centre is an area of central Perth, Western Australia, near the James Street Mall. It is home to a number of cultural institutions including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Western Australian Museum, State Library of Western Australia, State Records Office, State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Blue Room plus a number of coffee shops and bars. Fred Alexander (historian)
Frederick Alexander (known primarily as Fred Alexander) (12 April 1899 – 1996) was an Australian historian who specialised in foreign affairs and policy. He was the founding Head of the University of Western Australia's Department of History, where he was instrumental in the development of the history curriculum. Biography The son of a primary school headmaster, Fred Alexander was born in Victoria on 12 April 1899. He attended Melbourne High School, and in 1916 won an exhibition to attend lectures at Trinity College during his studies at the University of Melbourne, where he intended to gain a Bachelor of Laws degree. However, he developed an interest in history under the influence of Professor Ernest Scott, and deferred his law studies to obtain a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in history. J S Battye Library
The J S Battye Library (more properly known as the J. S. Battye Library of West Australian History) is an arm of the State Library of Western Australia. It stores much of the state's historical records and original publications including books, newspapers, periodicals, maps, and ephemera, as well as oral history tapes, photographs and artworks, films and video, and non-government records which are kept in the library's Private Archives collection. The Library provides a range of services, including reference, copying, and genealogical services, as well as consultancy and reader education. Northbridge, Western Australia
Northbridge is an inner city suburb of Perth, Western Australia, historically separated from Perth's central business district by the Fremantle and Joondalup railway lines. It is part of the City of Perth local government area. Location Located immediately north of the CBD, Northbridge is officially bounded by William Street, Roe Street, Newcastle Street and the Mitchell Freeway. James Street, Northbridge
James Street is a street which serves the Perth suburbs Perth and Northbridge. It is the main east-west road in the centre of Northbridge. A section of the eastern end of the street has been closed and modified as the James Street Mall in the Perth Cultural Centrewith the Western Australian Museum, Alexander Library Building and older government buildings contained within the culture centre area.
