Battle Of Albert (1916)
The Battle of Albert (1–13 July 1916) is the British name for the first two weeks of British–French offensive operations of the Battle of the Somme. The Allied preparatory artillery bombardment commenced on 24 June and the British–French infantry attacked on 1 July, on the south bank from Foucaucourt to the Somme and from the Somme north to Gommecourt, beyond Serre. The French Sixth Army and the right wing of the British Fourth Army inflicted a considerable defeat on the German 2nd Army but from near the Albert–Bapaume road to Gommecourt, the British attack was a disaster, where most of the casualties of the day were incurred. Against the wishes of General Joseph Joffre, General Sir Douglas Haig abandoned the offensive north of the road to reinforce the success in the south, where the British–French forces pressed forward through several intermediate lines closer to the German second position. The French Sixth Army advanced across the Flaucourt plateau south ...

Albert (Discworld)
Death is a fictional character in Terry Pratchett's ''Discworld'' series and a parody of several other personifications of death. Like most Grim Reapers, he is a black-robed skeleton who usually carries a scythe. His jurisdiction is specifically the Discworld itself; he is only a part, or minion, of Azrael: the universal Death. He has been generally used by Pratchett to explore the problems of human existence, and has become more sympathetic throughout the series. Works Death has appeared in every Discworld novel, with the exception of ''The Wee Free Men'' and '' Snuff'', and had a possible cameo at the end of ''Johnny and the Dead'' (the character was not identified, but spoke in unquoted small caps as Death does in the rest of the series). The Discworld books in which Death is a leading character, starting with ''Mort'' in 1987, are: *''Mort'' – 1987 *'' Reaper Man'' – 1991 *''Soul Music'' – 1994 *''Hogfather'' – 1996 *''Thief of Time'' – 2001 Character Death's hollow ...

At the , Albert had a population of 81, though Albert once had a population of 900. Copper had been discovered in the area by 1900. In the early 20th century, there were several copper mines nearby, the most significant of which was the Iron Duke Mine, which operated from around 1909 until the early 1920s. Around the time that mining commenced, the area was known as 'Albert Water Holes'. Its post office was originally called 'The Alberts' but became Albert in 1916; it closed in 1982. A school—known as 'Albertia', until it was renamed Albert in January 1920—opened there in January 1899 and closed in June 1972. The date of the opening of the school, the name of one of its streets, Federation Street, and the timing of the discovery of copper suggests that the village itself dates from around the time ...

Battle Of Albert (1914)
The Battle of Albert (also known as the First Battle of Albert) began on 25 September 1914, in what became known as the "Race to the Sea", during the First World War. It followed the First Battle of the Aisne as both sides moved northwards, trying to turn the northern flank of their opponent. The Second Army ( Noël de Castelnau), began to assemble at Amiens in mid-September and was directed by General Joseph Joffre, the Generalissimo of the French Army, to attack near Albert. On 25 September, the Second Army advanced eastwards but instead of advancing round an open northern flank, encountered the German 6th Army which had attacked in the opposite direction, reaching Bapaume on 26 September and Thiepval the next day. The Germans had intended to outflank the French and drive westward to the English Channel, seizing the industrial and agricultural regions of northern France and isolating Belgium. Neither side could defeat their opponent and the battle ended in stalemate around 2 ...
