Abbot is an ecclesiastical title given to the male head of a monastery in various Western religious traditions, including Christianity. The office may also be given as an honorary title to a clergyman who is not the head of a monastery. The female equivalent is abbess. Origins The title had its origin in the monasteries of Egypt and Syria, spread through the eastern Mediterranean, and soon became accepted generally in all languages as the designation of the head of a monastery. Abbott House (childcare Agency)
Abbott House is a community-based human services agency headquartered in Irvington, New York, established in 1963. While its main facility is in Irvington, Abbott House has offices in Manhattan and the Bronx, as well as Westchester, Dutchess and Orange, Sullivan counties. It serves homeless, neglected, abused, or developmentally disabled boys in grades 2 through 9, ages 7 through 17, and is a member of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies. In 1992, Abbott House expanded its operations to include developmentally disabled adults as well. As of 2010, the Abbott House residential facility houses around 60 boys, most of whom attend the Abbott School, but Abbott House provides services to around 1200 people not in residential custody. Abbott's Get Together is a long-running convention for magicians in the United States and around the world, which is held each year in Colon, Michigan. It was founded in 1937 by Percy Abbott and his business partner, Recil Bordner. The Get Together is well-known within the magician industry as an annual event to gather and share information with their peers. Abbott-Detroit
The Abbott-Detroit was an American luxury automobile manufactured between 1909 and 1919. It was designed by John G. Utz, designer of the Chalmers, who had previously worked for Olds Motor Works and the Autocar Company. Considered powerful and well-designed, the Abbott sported a Continental engine. The cars were guaranteed for life by 1913, when electric lighting and starting had been standardized. Total production for the 1911 model year was expected to be 3000 cars. By 1916, production of these cars had reached 15 to 20 units a day, so the company moved from Detroit to a larger facility in Cleveland. This proved too stressful on the company's finances, and they declared bankruptcy in April 1918. Dealerships The company opened a dealership in Kansas City, Missouri around June 1910. Abbott Records was an American record label operated by music promoter and producer Fabor Robison from 1951 to about 1958. Abbott Records released mainly country and western music, rockabilly and — towards the end of its existence — mainstream pop vocal selections, enjoying considerable chart success for a label of its modest means. Early history After serving a stint in the U.S. Army during World War II, Arkansas native Fabor Robison (b. 1911 — d. 1986) settled in Southern California and began to work as a talent scout. In late 1949 or early 1950, Robison discovered singer Johnny Horton, who had lately won a talent contest in Texas and had returned to his native Los Angeles, bought Western clothes, and was looking for a gig. Abbott Handerson Thayer
Abbott Handerson Thayer (August 12, 1849May 29, 1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. As a painter of portraits, figures, animals and landscapes, he enjoyed a certain prominence during his lifetime, and his paintings are represented in the major American art collections. He is perhaps best known for his 'angel' paintings, some of which use his children as models. During the last third of his life, he worked together with his son, Gerald Handerson Thayer, on a book about protective coloration in nature, titled '' Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom''. First published by Macmillan in 1909, then reissued in 1918, it may have had an effect on military camouflage during World War I. However it was roundly mocked by Theodore Roosevelt and others for its assumption that all animal coloration is cryptic.
