1960 ABC Championship
The 1960 ABC Championship was the first edition of the ABC Championship, a tournament which was held by FIBA Asia. The tournament which was held in Manila, Philippines saw seven teams compete in a round-robin tournament with the top four teams qualifying through to the final round where they played each other again one more time. In the final round, the Philippines took out the title as they won all nine of their games to come out the winners. Taiwan finished as the runner-up with the only two losses being against the champions. Japan rounded out the podium in third. Carlos Badion
Carlos Velasco Badion (August 16, 1935 – June 20, 2002) was a Filipino basketball player. Although born in Lubao, Pampanga, he grew up in Tondo, Manila where he started his checkered career playing in sandlot tournaments and for Abad Santos High School in Manila. At 5'11" tall, he was first spotted in an interscholastic tournament by Valerio Lopez of Mapua where he subsequently enrolled. He eventually shone in the NCAA and the MICAA, playing for such teams as the Jacinto Rubber Shoes, Crispa (where he became one of the pioneering members of that team) and YCO. Known as the "Bad Boy" of Philippine basketball because of his unforgiving and physical defense, Badion popularized the moves that came to be known as the "bicycle drive" and the "jackknife layup," moves which young players tried to imitate during the 1950s. 1963 ABC Championship
The 1963 ABC Championship was the second edition of the ABC Championship, a tournament which was held by FIBA Asia since 1960. The tournament which was held in Taipei, Taiwan saw eight teams compete (an expansion of one team) in a round-robin tournament with the top four teams qualifying through to the championship round where they played each other again one more time. The bottom four teams would compete in a classification round. The tournament saw the first tie-breaker matches to be played with Thailand defeating Malaya to book a spot in the championship round. In the championship round, the Philippines and Taiwan finish level with an 8–2 record. This meant that they had to play in a play-off to decide the champion which was played on December 3. FIBA Asian Cup
The FIBA Asia Cup (formerly the FIBA Asia Championship and ABC Championship) is an international basketball tournament which takes place every four years between the men's national teams of Asia and Oceania. Through the 2015 edition, the tournament took place every two years and was also a qualifying tournament for the FIBA World Cup and the Olympic basketball tournament. However, since 2017, the tournament was renamed the FIBA Asia Cup and now includes teams from FIBA Oceania. Also, it was the first to be played on a new four-year cycle, and is no longer a part of the qualifying process for the World Cup or the Olympics. The Philippines men's national basketball team ( fil, Pambansang koponan ng basketbol ng Pilipinas), commonly known as Gilas Pilipinas, is the basketball team representing the Philippines. The team is managed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (Basketball Federation of the Philippines or simply SBP). The team won a bronze medal in the 1954 FIBA World Championship, the best finish by any team outside the Americas and Europe. The Chinese Taipei men's national basketball team is the men's basketball team representing the Republic of China on Taiwan in international competitions, organised and run by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA; ). The Rizal Memorial Coliseum is an indoor arena in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines. Its capacity is 6,100. History The Rizal Memorial Coliseum within the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was built on the former site of Manila Carnival Grounds in 1934 as a tennis stadium named "Rizal Memorial Tennis Stadium", but was later renamed “Rizal Memorial Coliseum” at an unknown time.
