Örebro
Örebro ( , ) is the sixth-largest city in Sweden, the seat of Örebro Municipality, and capital of the Örebro County. It is situated by the Närke Plain, near the lake Hjälmaren, a few kilometers inland along the small river Svartån, and has a population of approximately 126,000 in the city proper. It is one of the largest inland hubs of the country, and a major logistic and commercial operating site. Örebro is home to Örebro University, a major university hospital, a medieval castle, the water park Gustavsvik as well as several large shopping malls and the Oset-Rynningeviken nature reserve at the lakefront. Örebro is served by Örebro Airport 10 km (6 mi) southwest of the city, and by Örebro Central Station, serviced by the Mälaren Line and Western Main Line. Örebro County ( sv, Örebro län) is a county or ''län'' in central Sweden. It borders the counties of Västra Götaland, Värmland, Dalarna, Västmanland, Södermanland and Östergötland. It is frequently culturally divided into the hilly northern region of Bergslagen, where mining and metallurgic industry have been important since the Middle Ages, and the southern Mälardalen of lakes and farms. Örebro University
Örebro University ( sv, Örebro universitet) is a state university in Örebro, Sweden. The university has its roots in the Örebro campus of Uppsala University, which became an independent state university college in 1977, Örebro University College (''Högskolan i Örebro''). The university college also incorporated three other existing educational institutions in Örebro: the teaching seminar, the sports college (founded in 1966) and the social work college (founded 1967). Örebro University College was granted the privileges of a university by the Government of Sweden in 1999, becoming the 12th university in Sweden. Örebro Municipality
Örebro Municipality ( sv, Örebro kommun) is a municipality in Örebro County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Örebro. The municipality was created from the ''City of Örebro'' and surrounding rural municipalities in 1971 and with some areas added in 1974 it had an area of 1,840 km2. In 1995 the municipality was split in two when Lekeberg Municipality was recreated in its boundaries from 1967. Närke () is a Swedish traditional province, or ''landskap'', situated in Svealand in south central Sweden. It is bordered by Västmanland to the north, Södermanland to the east, Östergötland to the southeast, Västergötland to the southwest, and Värmland to the northwest. Närke has a surface area of 4,126 km² and a total population of 208,376. Name The name of the province (Neeric 1165-81) comes from an old word ''när'' (narrow) which refers to the narrow ridge where the church of Norrbyås (Nerboahs 1275) is situated. Örebro Castle
Örebro Castle ( sv, Örebro slott) is a medieval castle fortification at Svartån in Örebro County, Sweden. It was expanded during the reign of the royal family Vasa (House of Vasa) and finally rebuilt about 1900. Some of the rooms are used as classrooms for pupils from Karolinska gymnasiet. History The castle lies on an island in the river Svartån. The name of Örebro comes from the small stones ("ör") that the river transports. The second part of the word comes from the bridge ("bro") . The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century. It was probably built during the reign of King Magnus IV of Sweden (1316–1374). In 1364, Albrecht von Mecklenburg (ca 1340–1412) captured a fortress in Örebro. That was probably a predecessor of today's castle, which was built on the small island within the Svartå river. Saint Nicholas Church, Örebro
The Saint Nicholas Church ( sv, Sankt Nikolai kyrka) or the Nicholas Church ( sv, Nikolaikyrkan) is a church building in central Örebro, Sweden. It was originally called the Örebro Church ( sv, Örebro kyrka) because it was the only Church of Sweden building in town until the early 20th century. Örebro Nikolai parish is in the Diocese of Strängnäs of the Church of Sweden. History Construction began in the late 13th century and is supposed to have been completed by the mid 14th century. Large parts of the church are built in the limestone. There are Romanesque styles in the oldest parts and therefore Gothic style in the newer. The oldest is the choir area from around 1275–1300. Lekeberg Municipality
Lekeberg Municipality (''Lekebergs kommun'') is a municipality in Örebro County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Fjugesta, with around 2,000 inhabitants. Lekeberg was first formed as a municipality in connection with the local government reform of 1952 by the amalgamation of five smaller units. In 1967 two more parishes were added. The next reform of 1971 placed the area within Örebro Municipality. It was re-established in 1995 within its 1967 borders. Geography Mostly woods and farm lands, with Garphyttan National Park, established in 1909, located within the municipality. The largest industry sector is farming.
