Taxonomy

The genera ''Luisierella'' and ''Timmiella'' have been traditionally placed in family Pottiaceae in order Pottiales. However, phylogenetic analyses have found these genera to form a clade, as part of a protohaplolepidous grade of early branching lineages in
Dicranidae The Dicranidae are a widespread and diverse subclass of mosses in class Bryopsida, with many species of dry or disturbed areas. They are distinguished by their spores; the peristome Peristome (from the Greek ''peri'', meaning 'around' or 'about' ...
, for which the family Timmiellaceae was erected. The family is not currently assigned to an order, although it may be sister to family Distichiaceae.
