Haughton was born on 7 May 1888 in
Bethnal Green, London. He was the eldest of three children born to Henry Charles Haughton and Alice Aves.
During
World War I, Haughton enlisted with the
Royal Army Medical Corps

, was posted to Egypt and then India, and picked up malaria, leading to his discharge from the army.

He was elected a
Fellow of the Royal Society in 1961.

Haughton's work on South African geology culminated in the 1964 publication of ''Gold Deposits of the Witwatersrand Basin: The Geology of Some Ore Deposits of Southern Africa'', Volume 1, a collection of 18 papers on Witwatersrand geology.
