I said that I could not accept that Kelbajar was 'liberated' territory, when all of its fifty thousand or so Azerbaijani or Kurdish inhabitants had been expelled". According to de Waal, for Karapetian "the past eclipsed the present: those were 'Turks' and interlopers".
