Morphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences showed that ''P. quadruplicatus'' belongs to the so-called ''goeldii'' group of ''Proechimys'' species, and shares closer phylogenetic affinities with the other members of this clade: ''
P. steerei'' and ''
P. goeldii''.
