Etymology

The district derives its name from the
Arabic Arabic (, , or , ) is a Central Semitic languages, Central Semitic language of the Afroasiatic languages, Afroasiatic language family spoken primarily in the Arab world. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) assigns lang ...
word "mahraqa", meaning "burnt". It was so named for its dark-colored soil and for the dark-colored leaves apparent on trees growing in the region which give the impression that its entire landscape had been charred in the past.
