, and studied in Munich. In 1870 he graduated with the dissertation ''Das Inulin. Ein Beitrag zur Pflanzenphysiologie'' (The inulin, a contribution to the plant physiology). He worked with Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli and Julius Sachs.
