History
Dampier Archipelago is the site of some of Australia's oldest domestic structures, estimated to be between 8000 and 9000 years old.
The largest island (or peninsula) in the group was known as ''
Murujuga'' by the
Yaburara people.
The first
British settlers renamed it Dampier Island and it was later officially renamed
Burrup Peninsula.
Indigenous heritage
The
Yinidbarndi,

Woon-goo-tt-oo peoples have lived in the area for approximately 50,000 years.
In 1868, the area was the site of the
Flying Foam massacre, in which between 20 and 150 members of the Yaburara are reported to have been killed.
