Spielmann was admitted to the Luxembourg Bar in 1989, practising there until 2004. From 1991 to 1997, he was assistant lecturer in criminal law at the

He will serve as vice-president of the European Court of Human Rights for an initial term of three years from 13 September 2012. He was president of the court between 2012 and 2015. He was appointed judge of the court of justice of the European Union (General Court) as of 13 April 2016.
