Beath obtained her BA in Psychology from Duke University in 1966, and later studied at

, where she obtained her MBA in Computer and Information Systems in 1975, and her PhD in Computer and Information Systems in 1986 Beath started her career in private industry, where she held positions in information systems development and in consultancy.
