Life and work

Espinoza was born in Tijuana, Mexico and moved with his family to the United States at age two, growing up in suburban Los Angeles. He graduated from the
University of California, Riverside The University of California, Riverside (UCR or UC Riverside) is a public university, public Land-grant university, land-grant research university in Riverside, California, United States. It is one of the ten campuses of the University of Cali ...
, and earned an MFA from the
University of California, Irvine The University of California, Irvine (UCI or UC Irvine) is a Public university, public Land-grant university, land-grant research university in Irvine, California, United States. One of the ten campuses of the University of California system, U ...
's Program in Writing. He teaches at the University of California, Riverside where he serves as the Tomás Rivera Endowed Chair of Creative Writing, and lives in Los Angeles.
