Lizotte was an assistant professor of sociology at
Emory University Emory University is a private university, private research university in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1836 as Emory College by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named in honor of Methodist bishop John Emory. Its main campu ...
from 1978 to 1980. He first joined the faculty of the University at Albany's School of Criminal Justice in 1985 as an associate professor, and was named a full professor there in 1993. In 2016, he became a Distinguished Professor at the School. He served as the director of the School's Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center from 1994 to 1997, and then again from 2003 to 2010, when he was named the School's dean; he retained the latter position until 2015. From 2004 to 2007, he was an executive counselor for the

Honors and awards
