Etymology

The source is uncertain, but it is likely related to ''aúo'' (, 'to shout, to call'). It is also speculated that it denotes a large Mediterranean sea-cow. Additionally, it is also coincidentally the Aiolic variation of the Doric word ''hébe'' (, 'youth').
