Yaws
Yaws is a tropical infection of the skin, bones, and joints caused by the spirochete bacterium ''Treponema pallidum pertenue''. The disease begins with a round, hard swelling of the skin, in diameter. The center may break open and form an ulcer. This initial skin lesion typically heals after 3–6 months. After weeks to years, joints and bones may become painful, fatigue may develop, and new skin lesions may appear. The skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet may become thick and break open. The bones (especially those of the nose) may become misshapen. After 5 years or more, large areas of skin may die, leaving scars. Yaws is spread by direct contact with the fluid from a lesion of an infected person. The contact is usually nonsexual. The disease is most common among children, who spread it by playing together. Yaw-Yan (from Filipino ''Sayaw ng Kamatayan'', lit. ''"Dance of Death"''), is a Filipino martial art developed by Napoleon A. Fernandez and based on older Filipino martial arts. Since its inception in the 1970s, it has dominated the kickboxing scene in the Philippines and has proven very effective against other stand-up fighting arts. Yaw-Yan closely resembles Muay Thai, but differs in the hip-torquing motion as well as the downward-cutting nature of its kicks, the arm strikes resembling Bolo knife movements with Randy A. E. Eugene Yaw (born February 26, 1943) is an American politician from Pennsylvania currently serving as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 23rd district since 2009. Early life and education Yaw was born to Emerson A. and Harriet Yaw. He graduated from Montoursville High School and attended Bucknell University from 1961 to 1963. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1968 and graduated from the United States Army Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged as first lieutenant after an overseas tour of duty as an artillery officer. Ellen Beach Yaw (September 14, 1869 – September 9, 1947) was an American Coloratura#Modern usage, coloratura soprano, best known for her concert career and extraordinary vocal range, and for originating the title role in Arthur Sullivan's comic opera ''The Rose of Persia'' (1899). After she undertook American and European concert tours in 1894 and 1895, Yaw was heard by Sullivan at a private concert in London and arranged for her to be cast as the lead in ''The Rose of Persia''. Overview Because Yaws uses Erlang's lightweight threading system, it performs well under high concurrency. A load test conducted in 2002 comparing Yaws and Apache found that with the hardware tested, Apache failed at 4,000 concurrent connections, while Yaws continued functioning with over 80,000 concurrent connections. The load test concludes, "The problem with Apache is not related to the Apache code per se but is due to the manner in which the underlying operating system (Linux) implements concurrency.
