Whitestart
Whitestarts are New World warblers in the genus ''Myioborus''. The English name refers to the white outer tail feathers which are a prominent feature of the members of this genus ("start" is an archaic word for "tail"). The species in this genus are also often called "redstarts". The stronghold of the whitestarts is northern South America, although a few species range along the Andes as far south as north-western Argentina, while others range north through Central America and as far north as the United States, in the case of the painted whitestart. Most species are restricted to mountain forest and woodland. The ancestral ''Myioborus'' warblers, together with those in the genus ''Basileuterus'' seem to have colonised South America early, perhaps before it was linked to the northern continent, and these two genera provide most of the resident warbler species of that region. Name Whitestart is the name used for all species in this genus by the Birds of the World: Recommended E ...

New World Warbler
The New World warblers or wood-warblers are a group of small, often colorful, passerine birds that make up the family Parulidae and are restricted to the New World. They are not closely related to Old World warblers or Australian warblers. Most are arboreal, but some, like the ovenbird and the two waterthrushes, are primarily terrestrial. Most members of this family are insectivores. This group likely originated in northern Central America, where the greatest number of species and diversity between them is found. From there, they spread north during the interglacial periods, mainly as migrants, returning to the ancestral region in winter. Two genera, '' Myioborus'' and '' Basileuterus'', seem to have colonized South America early, perhaps before the two continents were linked, and together constitute most warbler species of that region. The scientific name for the family, Parulidae, originates from the fact that Linnaeus in 1758 named the northern parula as a tit, ''Parus ...

Spectacled Whitestart
The spectacled whitestart or spectacled redstart (''Myioborus melanocephalus'') is a species of bird in the family Parulidae. It is found in humid Andean forests, woodland and scrub from southern Colombia to Bolivia Taxonomy The spectacled whitestart was described in 1844 as ''Setophaga melanocephala'', from a type specimen collected in Maraynioc, Peru. It is sometimes known as the spectacled redstart. It forms a monophyletic group along with the yellow-fronted whitestart (''M. ornatus''), the white-fronted whitestart (''M. albifrons''), and the golden-fronted whitestart (''M. chrysops''). Whether all four form distinct species has been a matter of debate. ''M. melanocephalus'' and ''M. ornatus'' were previously considered the same species, and in the areas where the two come into contact in the southern Colombian Andes, intermediate phenotypes have been observed. The placement of ''M. m. ruficoronatus'' within the spectacled whitestart has also been questioned by molecular s ...

Slate-throated Whitestart
The slate-throated whitestart or slate-throated redstart (''Myioborus miniatus'') is a species of bird in the family Parulidae native to Central and South America. Description The slate-throated whitestart is a long-tailed warbler measuring long. It has a deep rufous head, dark back, and contrasting bright yellow breast, belly and white vent and tail tips. The bill is black, and the legs are blackish-gray. While most of its plumage changes little throughout its large range, the underparts grade from yellow in most of its range, to red in the northernmost part. Distribution and habitat It is found disjunctly in humid highland forests, from upper understory to mid canopy, in Mexico, Central America, the Andes from western Venezuela to northwestern Argentina, the Venezuelan Coastal Range, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the tepuis. It occurs at around above sea level. In July 2024, a specimen was spotted in the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove of San Francisco, California. The s ...

Collared Whitestart
The collared whitestart (''Myioborus torquatus''), also known as the collared redstart, is a tropical New World warbler endemic to the mountains of Costa Rica and western-central Panama. Description The collared whitestart is around in length with a weight of . It has a chestnut crown bordered with black, and a black forehead. The rest of the upper parts are slaty black, and the tail is black with white edges, hence the bird's name: "start" is an old English word for "tail". The face and underparts are bright yellow, with a black band across the breast. The sexes are similar, but young birds are duller, with a browner back, weakly yellow underparts, and the head entirely slate-coloured, with no yellow on the face or red on the crown. Behaviour The call is a sharp ''pit'', and the song is a mixture of slurred whistles, warbles and trills. The collared whitestart feeds on insect Insects (from Latin ') are pancrustacean hexapod invertebrates of the class Insecta. T ...

Painted Whitestart
The painted redstart or painted whitestart (''Myioborus pictus'') is a species of New World warbler found in mountainous areas across inland Central America. They are among the largest warblers, reaching the length of , tail included. Adult birds have glossy black plumage, with white strips on the wing and a bright red belly. Female and male birds have similar appearance. Female painted redstarts have a rare feature of being as good singers as the males. Taxonomy When he first described the species in 1829, naturalist William John Swainson assigned it to the genus ''Setophaga'' — the same genus as that of the American redstart — where it remained for nearly a century and a half, though one naturalist placed it in the Old World flycatcher genus ''Muscicapa'' during that time. By the mid 1960s, researchers recommended that it be moved to its current genus, ''Myioborus'', based on various similarities with the other whitestarts. The painted redstart is the sister taxon to all t ...
