The van Voorst tot Voorst family is an old Dutch noble family from the province of Overijssel. History The family has been noble since at least the 14th century ("Uradel"). The first documented ancestor is Fredericus van Hekeren van der Ese (in 1327). His son Frederik van Heeckeren van der Eze (1320 – 1386) was the head of the ''Heeckerens'' faction during the War of the Guelderian Succession. Through his marriage with Lutgardis van Voorst, whose ancestors owned both the castle Rechteren near Dalfsen as well as the castle Voorst near Zwolle, the surname van Voorst entered the family. In 1432, Frederik's grandson, Frederik van Hekeren genaamd van Rechteren († 1462), married Cunegonde van Polanen. Their son, Zeger van Hekeren genaamd van Voorst, became the ancestor of the present-day family van Voorst tot Voorst. The Gelre Armorial () is a medieval armorial. History The armorial was compiled before 1396 by one Claes Heinenzoon (or Heynen, fl. 1345−1414) who was a herald in the service of the Duke of Guelders and also the creator of the Beyeren Armorial. The book displays some 1,800 coats-of-arms from all over Europe, in color, and is one of the most important sources for medieval heraldry. The Gelre Armorial manuscript is nowadays preserved in the Royal Library of Belgium (signature code ms. 15652-5). A copy from around 1500, produced by Cornelis Enghebrechtsz, is preserved in the library of . This version, however, only contains 1400 arms. Lt. Gen. Herman Franciscus Maria baron van Voorst tot Voorst (The Hague, 2 August 1886 - 9 July 1971) was a Dutch Army officer and politician. He was the son of Jan Joseph Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst Senior, and a younger brother of General Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst. In 1915, he married Felicia Maria baroness Schimmelpenninck van der Oye (1889-1952). He attended the Royal Military Academy in Breda and The Hague as well as the Saumur Cavalry School in France. Baron van Voorst tot Voorst was appointed in February 1940 as Chief of the General Staff, under the Supreme Commander of the Land and Naval Forces, General Henri Winkelman.
