Tree Sitting
Tree sitting is a form of environmentalist civil disobedience in which a protester sits in a tree, usually on a small platform built for the purpose, to protect it from being cut down (speculating that loggers will not endanger human lives by cutting an occupied tree). Supporters usually provide the tree sitters with food and other supplies. About Tree sitting is a strategy that provides a high level of public attention since it is considered to be very dangerous and requires highly-skilled police officers to evict the sitters. Tree sitting is often used as a stalling tactic, to prevent the cutting of trees while lawyers fight in the courts to secure the long-term victories. Tree-sitting was once a children's pastime. Luna (tree)
Luna is the name given in October 1997 to a 1,000-year-old, 200-foot-tall coast redwood tree located near the community of Stafford in Humboldt County, California which was occupied for 738 days by forest activist Julia Butterfly Hill and saved by an agreement between Hill and the Pacific Lumber Company. The tree was vandalized about a year after the agreement but was repaired and survived. Although ''Luna'' is usually a name for female individuals, the ''coast redwood'' species is monoecious, with pollen and seed cones on the same plant. Location Despite some news reports to the contrary, Luna is not located in the Headwaters Forest, a preserved old growth forest, but on a windswept ridge overlooking the community of Stafford, south of Scotia. Mountain Valley Pipeline
The Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) is an under-construction natural gas pipeline in the United States from southern Virginia to northwestern West Virginia. The MVP is , and there is also a proposed Southgate Extension to the pipeline which runs 75 miles from Virginia into North Carolina. The completed pipeline would have a capacity of 2 million dekatherms (Dts) of natural gas per day (approximately 200 TWh per year), with a large quantity of that gas being produced from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations. The pipeline has met with opposition in the form of legal challenges, regulatory hurdles, and direct action. Yellow Finch Tree Sit
The Yellow Finch tree sit was an aerial blockade in Montgomery County, Virginia against the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). The blockade lasted 932 days from September 5, 2018 until March 24, 2021. Participants in the blockade have claimed that it is the longest continuous aerial blockade in the United States. Activists rotated in and out of the trees and were supported by teams on the ground providing food and supplies. A court-issued injunction in November, 2020 removed the ground encampment. A representative from MVP stated in November 2020 that the blockade had cost the company $213,000 in delays and security expenses. Mountaintop Removal
Mountaintop removal mining (MTR), also known as mountaintop mining (MTM), is a form of surface mining at the summit or summit ridge of a mountain. Coal seams are extracted from a mountain by removing the land, or overburden, above the seams. This process is considered to be safer compared to underground mining because the coal seams are accessed from above instead of underground. In the United States, this method of coal mining is conducted in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. Explosives are used to remove up to 400 vertical feet (120 m) of mountain to expose underlying coal seams. Alpha Natural Resources is a large American producer of metallurgical coal ("met coal") for the industrial production of steel and iron and low-sulfur thermal coal ("steam coal") to fuel steam boilers for the production of electrical power. Brushy Fork Coal Impoundment
The Brushy Fork Coal Impoundment, also known as the Brushy Fork Coal Sludge Dam, is a large tailings dam on the Brushy Fork near Marfork in western Raleigh County of West Virginia, United States. It is located northwest of Beckley, the seat of Raleigh County. Brushy Fork flows into Little Marsh Fork, which then enters Marsh Fork, which is a tributary of the Coal River. The purpose of the dam is to store a sludge consisting of tailings and waste from a nearby coal mine. In 1995 Massey Energy received a permit to construct the dam. Mountain Justice (organization)
Mountain Justice is a grassroots movement established in 2005 to raise worldwide awareness of mountaintop removal mining and its effects on the environment and peoples of Appalachia. The group seeks to encourage conservation, efficiency, solar and wind energy as alternatives to all forms of surface mining. It self-describes as "a regional Appalachian network committed to ending mountaintop removal". It seeks justice because the mountaintop removal (MTR) it opposes is a form of coal mining known as mountaintop removal mining which produces coal sludge toxic waste which is stored in a dam on the mountain and leaches into the groundwater, which poisons the environment, which defaces the top of the mountain, and which is not stopped due to political corruption.
