Telescopefish are small, deep-sea aulopiform fish comprising the small family Giganturidae. The two known species are within the genus ''Gigantura''. Though rarely captured, they are found in cold, deep tropical to subtropical waters worldwide. The common name of these fish is related to their bizarre, tubular eyes. The genus name ''Gigantura'' refers to the Gigantes, a race of giants in Greek mythology—coupled with the suffix ''oura'', meaning 'tail', thus ''Gigantura'' refers to the greatly elongated, ribbon-like lower half of the tailfin that may comprise over half of the total body length. Aulopiform
Aulopiformes is a diverse order of marine ray-finned fish consisting of some 15 extant and several prehistoric families with about 45 genera and over 230 species. The common names grinners, lizardfishes and allies, or aulopiforms are sometimes used for this group. Pelvic fins or ventral fins are paired fins located on the ventral surface of fish. The paired pelvic fins are homologous to the hindlimbs of tetrapods. A dorsal fin is a fin located on the back of most marine and freshwater vertebrates within various taxa of the animal kingdom.
