The Teen Idles
The Teen Idles were an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C., in September 1979. Consisting of teenagers Nathan Strejcek, Geordie Grindle, Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson (musician), Jeff Nelson, they recorded two demo sessions and the 1980 ''Minor Disturbance'' extended play, EP before breaking up in November 1980. The influential independent record label Dischord Records was originally created with the sole purpose of releasing The Teen Idles ''Minor Disturbance'' 7" record. They were an early landmark in the Washington, D.C. hardcore, D.C. hardcore movement, and MacKaye and Nelson would later form the seminal punk rock outfit Minor Threat. The Teen Idles were among the first punk groups from the early 1980s hardcore movement to break out of their regional scene to tour and sell nationally. Jeff Nelson (musician)
Jeff Nelson (born 1962 in South Africa) is an American musician, graphic designer, and record-label owner. He is best known as the drummer for the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk band Minor Threat. Biography Nelson met Ian MacKaye in high school and the two saw their first punk rock show, The Cramps, together. Soon after, they formed their first band, The Slinkees. After playing one show, a lineup change caused them to rename the band The Teen Idles. He also co-founded the independent record label Dischord Records along with MacKaye in 1980, whose first record was the Teen Idles. They continue to run Dischord together. The duo also comprised the projects Skewbald/Grand Union and Egg Hunt; both bands recorded only one single. Nelson also runs the record label Adult Swim Records (distributed by Dischord) and Pedestrian Press, as well as being a political activist. Nelson collects Jeep Wagoneers and resides in Toledo, Ohio. Henry Rollins
Henry Lawrence Garfield (born February 13, 1961), known professionally as Henry Rollins, is an American singer, writer, spoken word artist, actor, comedian, and presenter. After performing in the short-lived hardcore punk band State of Alert in 1980, Rollins fronted the California hardcore band Black Flag (band), Black Flag from 1981 to 1986. Following the band's breakup, he established the record label and publishing company 2.13.61 to release his spoken word albums, and formed the Rollins Band, which toured with a number of lineups from 1987 to 2003 and in 2006. Rollins has hosted numerous radio shows, such as ''Harmony in My Head'' on Indie 103, and television shows such as ''The Henry Rollins Show'' and ''120 Minutes''. He had recurring dramatic roles in the second season of ''Sons of Anarchy'' as A.J. Inner Ear Studios
Inner Ear Studios is a recording studio founded in Arlington, Virginia that has been in operation since the late 1970s. Originally started in founder Don Zientara's basement, the studio spent many years on South Oakland St. in Arlington. The studio is now back in Don's basement, and has been in continuous operation for over 40 years. During that time, virtually all of Washington, DC's most widely recognized and acclaimed bands have recorded there. The studio is known for its association with the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene. History The studio was started by Zientara in his own home in Arlington in the late 1970s. At first, Zientara recorded harp music and Celtic folk tunes, but at the end of the 70's, Zientara began to record punk music, with Teen Idles being one of the first bands he recorded. Skip Groff
Frank "Skip" Groff (November 20, 1948 – February 18, 2019) was an American record producer, disc jockey, and owner of Yesterday and Today record store (also known as Y&T) in Rockville, Maryland, at the center of much of Washington D.C.'s punk and alternative music scenes. Groff was born in Waltham, Massachusetts and moved to Suitland, Maryland, as a child. He attended the University of Maryland and was a disc jockey at WMUC, the campus radio station. Groff operated the independent record label Limp Records from 1978 to 1982. Called "a respected guru" of the DC punk and indie music scene, Groff was a radio DJ for WINX, WAVA, and WPGC, and did promotional work for RCA, before opening Yesterday and Today in September 1977. Groff was credited with helping Dischord Records get started, and his record store was an early retail outlet for their titles. The Mentors
The Mentors are an American heavy metal band, known for their deliberate shock rock lyrics. Originally formed in Seattle, Washington in May 1976, they relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1979. The band garnered attention both from noted hard rock acts and pro-censorship movements such as the Parents Music Resource Center, but the death of drummer and lead singer Eldon Hoke ("El Duce") in 1997 brought them unprecedented attention. Circle Jerks (stylized as Ciʀcle JƎʀᴋs) are an American hardcore punk band, formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, California. The group was founded by former Black Flag (band), Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. To date, Circle Jerks have released six studio albums, one compilation, a live album and a live DVD. Their debut album, ''Group Sex (album), Group Sex'' (1980), is considered a landmark of the hardcore genre. The band has broken up and re-formed several times, sometimes with different bassists and/or drummers. Dead Kennedys
Dead Kennedys are an American punk rock band that formed in San Francisco, California, in 1978. The band was one of the defining punk bands during its initial eight-year run. Initially consisting of lead guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride, lead vocalist Jello Biafra, drummer Bruce Slesinger, Ted and rhythm guitarist Carlo Cadona, 6025, 6025 left in 1979, and Ted left the following year after the band recorded their acclaimed first album ''Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables'' (1980). Hong Kong Café
The Hong Kong Café was a Los Angeles restaurant and music venue that was a part of the Los Angeles punk rock scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s when the club was owned and operated by Barry Seidel, Kim Turner and Suzy Frank, followed by a resurgence from 1992 to 1995. Located at 425 Gin Ling Way in the Chinatown district of Downtown Los Angeles, California and across the way from sometimes rival Esther Wong's Madame Wong's, the former Chinese restaurant was open to audiences of all ages. Mohawk Hairstyle
The mohawk (also referred to as a mohican in British English) is a hairstyle in which, in the most common variety, both sides of the head are shaven, leaving a strip of noticeably longer hair in the center. Mohawk hairstyles have existed for thousands of years. As of the 21st century, they are most commonly associated with Punk subculture, punks, or broader non-conformity.
