Sponsor (military)
A ship sponsor, by tradition, is a female civilian who is invited to "sponsor" a vessel, presumably to bestow good luck and divine protection over the seagoing vessel and all that sail aboard. In the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard the sponsor is technically considered a permanent member of the ship's crew and is expected to give a part of her personality to the ship, as well as advocate for its continued service and well-being. For passenger ships the sponsor is called a godmother if the sponsor is female, or a godfather if the sponsor is male. ''Carnival Glory'' is a operated by Carnival Cruise Line. She is the second of five ''Conquest''-class cruise ships. As of August 2022, she operates out of New Orleans. Construction Built by Fincantieri at their Monfalcone shipyard in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northern Italy, she was floated out on July 19, 2003, and christened by American physicist and astronaut Dr Sally Ride. Facilities ''Carnival Glory'' has two pools, six whirlpools, and a water slide. The ship also features a 13,300 square foot spa. ''Carnival Panorama'' is a operated by Carnival Cruise Line. After Carnival finalized the ship's order with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in December 2016, the vessel had her keel laid in January 2018 and she was formally delivered in October 2019 as the last ''Vista''-class vessel and the flagship of the fleet; she has served in the latter role until the ''Mardi Gras'' debuted in 2021. Jessica Dawn Lynch (born April 26, 1983) is an American teacher, actress, and former United States Army soldier who served in the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a private first class. On March 23, 2003, she was serving as a unit supply specialist with the 507th Maintenance Company when her convoy was ambushed by Iraqi troops during the Battle of Nasiriyah; Lynch was seriously injured during the offensive and captured by Iraqi soldiers shortly afterwards.
