Swimming At The 1972 Summer Olympics
The 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Munich, West Germany. 29 events in swimming were contested. There were a total of 532 participants from 52 countries competing. Perhaps the most spectacular athletic events were in swimming. Mark Spitz had a remarkable run, competing in seven events, winning seven Olympic titles and setting seven world records. In 2008, Michael Phelps matched Spitz's feat of setting seven world records in a single Olympics. According to the official Olympic website, "He took part in the 4 × 200 m one hour after his final in the 100 m butterfly. As for the 200 m freestyle gold, it was his third medal in three days". On the women's side of the competition, Shane Gould of Australia won five medals. She won the 200 m and 400 m freestyle as well as the 200 m individual medley, each with a new world-record time. The Olympia Schwimmhalle is an aquatics centre located in the Olympiapark, Munich, Olympiapark in Munich, Germany. Jerry Heidenreich
Jerome Alan Heidenreich (February 4, 1950 – April 18, 2002) was an American competition swimmer for Southern Methodist University, a 1972 Munich Olympic champion, and a former world record-holder. He set six world records during his swimming career, all as a relay team member. Early swimming He swam for Hillcrest High School in Dallas. In his Senior year at Hillcrest, Heidenreich set State records in the 100-yard butterfly of 53.1 seconds, and in the 200-yard freestyle of 1:46.3 seconds at the Texas Interscholastic League State Swimming Championships in Lubbock on March 22–23, 1968. Nobutaka Taguchi
is a retired Japanese breaststroke swimmer. He competed in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke and 4 × 100 m medley relay at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won two medals in 1972, a gold in the 100 m and a bronze in the 200 m events. His breaststroke gold medal was the first for Japan since 1956. He won during the five-year era dominated by John Hencken and David Wilkie. He also earned the bronze medal in the 200 m breaststroke at the 1972 Olympics and in both breaststrokes at the 1975 World Championships. He ended his career after the 1976 Olympics. Mitch Ivey
Mitchell Ivey (born February 2, 1949) is a former American international swimmer who was a backstroke specialist and Olympic medalist. Ivey later became a prominent Olympic and college swimming coach. John Murphy (swimmer)
John Joseph Murphy (born July 19, 1953) is an American former backstroke and freestyle swimmer who attended Indiana University and won a gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Beginning around the mid-80's, he worked as a CPA in New Mexico, and coached age group swimming in Los Alamos and Santa Fe. Mike Stamm
Michael Eugene Stamm (born August 6, 1952) is an American former backstroke swimmer who earned a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter medley relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. At the 1972 Olympics, the 20-year-old Stamm also won individual silver medals in the 100-meter and in the 200-meter backstroke. At that time, Stamm was the second-best backstroker in the world, behind East German Roland Matthes. Roland Matthes
Roland Matthes (, ; 17 November 1950 – 20 December 2019) was a German swimmer and the most successful backstroke swimmer of all time. Between April 1967 and August 1974 he won all backstroke competitions he entered. He won four European championships and three world championships in a row, and swam 19 world and 28 European records in various backstroke, butterfly and medley events. He was trained by Marlies Grohe. Douglas Dale Northway (born April 28, 1955) is an American former swimmer, who competed for the University of Washington and then the University of Arizona, and represented the United States at two consecutive Olympic Games. He won a bronze in the 1500-meter freestyle in the 1972 Munich Olympics, and swam an Olympic and world record time in the preliminaries of the 4x200 freestyle relays at the 1976 Mexico City Olympics. Michael Jay Burton (born July 3, 1947) is an American swimmer, three-time Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in two freestyle distance events. Early life When he was an eighth grader he was hit by a furniture truck while riding a bicycle with a friend. Earlier he loved to play football and basketball, but the injuries due to this accident made him abandon contact sports, and left swimming as one of the few fitness options. Burton graduated from El Camino High School. He won 10 AAU titles, and while at UCLA Burton was a NCCAA champion five times. These included the 500 Free (1970), 1650 Free (1967, 1968, 1970), and 200 Fly (1970), which also became an All-American for these events. Thomas Sean McBreen (born August 31, 1952) is an American former freestyle swimmer for the University of Southern California and a 1972 Olympic gold medalist in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. After receiving a bachelors and medical degree from USC, he would work as a physician specializing in family medicine in Ventura, California.
