Seggae
Seggae is a fusion genre of sega, the traditional music of the Mascarene Islands, and reggae. It was originally created in Mauritius by the musician Kaya and eventually became popular in the Mascarene Islands. Seggae is one of the most popular music genres in Mauritius. Origin It was invented in the mid-1980s by the Mauritian Rastafari singer Joseph Reginald Topize who was commonly known as Kaya, after a song title by Bob Marley. He campaigned for rights of the Mauritian Creole people. Kaya died in prison in 1999. Kaya was the most important and most well-known artist in the genre, and was often dubbed "Bob Marley of Seggae". Sega Music
Sega () is one of the major music genres of Mauritius and Réunion. It is a complete performance art, involving music, story-telling and traditional dance. Musically, the most modern forms common in Mauritius are its fusion genre Seggae and bhojpuri variations, whilst in Réunion we find the addition of maloya, the latter being much closer to the older, typical music influences originating from Madagascar. The variety of different sega forms is reflected in the multi-ethnic populous of the indigenous population of Mauritius. Kaya (Mauritian Musician)
Joseph Réginald Topize (10 August 1960 – 21 February 1999), popularly known by his stage name Kaya, was a Mauritian musician, and the creator of " seggae" - a fusion of Mauritian sega and reggae, two popular music genres in Mauritius. Kaya died while in police custody (purportedly beaten to death by the police), after being arrested for smoking marijuana during one of his concerts. Musical career Topize was born in Roche-Bois in Port Louis on August 10, 1960, from a family of five children. He was left under the supervision of an uncle as his father, a fisherman, was unable to support his education. Topize did not have a very happy childhood. Being a Mauritian Creole, he was a young victim of racism and found himself left on his own to find odd jobs at the age of 8 years. At 16, he began to learn the guitar. Fusion Genre
A music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions.
