Rugby union in Slovakia is a minor but growing sport. Governing body The governing body is the Slovak Rugby Union. History Rugby union was introduced to Czechoslovakia (as it was then) by the Czech/ Moravian writer Ondřej Sekora, when he returned from living in France in 1926, with a rugby ball and set of rules.Bath, Richard (ed.) Slovakia National Rugby Union Team
The Slovakia national rugby union team has yet to qualify for a Rugby World Cup. They are currently affiliated to FIRA-AER, but not yet to World Rugby. History Slovakia played their first match in 2006 against the Principality of Monaco and lost 0-6. However, the points went to them after it was discovered that Monaco had used ineligible players. In 2009, they withdrew from European competition for financial reasons, after having been unable to secure sponsorship. However, they returned to European competition in 2010, playing in the 2010–12 European Nations Cup Third Division. The new dynamic has been supported by the city of Bratislava and the Government of Slovakia. The dissolution of Czechoslovakia ( cs, Rozdělení Československa, sk, Rozdelenie Česko-Slovenska) took effect on December 31, 1992, and was the self-determined split of the federal republic of Czechoslovakia into the independent countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Both mirrored the Czech Socialist Republic and the Slovak Socialist Republic, which had been created in 1969 as the constituent states of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic until the end of 1989. FIRA – Association Of European Rugby
Rugby Europe is the administrative body for rugby union in Europe. It was formed in 1999 to promote, develop, organise, and administer the game of rugby in Europe under the authority of World Rugby (the sport's global governing body). However, it is not responsible for the organisation of the Six Nations Championship or the competitions run by European Professional Club Rugby (the European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup). The predecessor to Rugby Europe was the Fédération Internationale de Rugby Amateur (FIRA), which was established in 1934 to administer rugby union in Europe outside the authority of the International Rugby Football Board (as World Rugby was then called), and came to spread outside the continent. Bohemia
Bohemia ( ; cs, Čechy ; ; hsb, Čěska; szl, Czechy) is the westernmost and largest historical region of the Czech Republic. Bohemia can also refer to a wider area consisting of the historical Lands of the Bohemian Crown ruled by the Bohemian kings, including Moravia and Czech Silesia, in which case the smaller region is referred to as Bohemia proper as a means of distinction. Ondřej Sekora (25 September 1899, Brno – 4 July 1967, Prague) was a Czech painter, illustrator, writer, journalist and entomologist. He is known mainly as an author of children books. The Cyprus national rugby union team is nicknamed ‘’The Mighty Mouflons’’ after a kind of horned sheep which is also the republic's national animal.
