Riser Card
A riser card is a printed circuit board that gives a computer motherboard the option for additional expansion cards to be added to the computer or for existing expansion cards to be mounted in a different location. Usage A riser is usually connected to the mainboard's slot through an edge connector, though some, such as NLX_(motherboard_form_factor), NLX and Next Unit of Computing Extreme, instead are plugged into an edge connector on the mainboard itself. In general, the main purpose is to change the orientation of the expansion cards such that they fit a limited space within casing. PCI-X, short for Peripheral Component Interconnect eXtended, is a computer bus and expansion card standard that enhances the 32-bit Conventional PCI, PCI local bus for higher Bandwidth (computing), bandwidth demanded mostly by Server (computing), servers and workstations. It uses a modified protocol to support higher Clock rate, clock speeds (up to 133 MHz), but is otherwise similar in electrical implementation. LPX (form Factor)
LPX (short for Low Profile eXtension), originally developed by Western Digital, was a loosely defined motherboard format ( form factor) widely used from 1987 to the late 1990s. There was never any official LPX specification, but the design normally featured a motherboard with the main I/O ports mounted on the back (something that was later adopted by the ATX form factor), and a riser card in the center of the motherboard, on which the PCI and ISA slots were mounted. This layout was first used on IBM's PS/2 Model 30 personal computer, which Western Digital used as the basis for the creation of LPX.
