During the Mughal Empire, ''Munshi'' () came to be used as a respected title for persons who achieved mastery over language and politics in the Indian subcontinent. Use in Bengal The surname "Munshi" ( Bengali: মুন্সি) is used by both Bengali Hindu and Bengali Muslim families in West Bengal, India and in Bangladesh. Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi
Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (; 30 December 1887 – 8 February 1971), popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer from Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to author and politician. He is a well-known name in Gujarati literature. He founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an educational trust, in 1938. Munshi wrote his works in three languages namely Gujarati, English and Hindi. Before independence of India, Munshi was part of Indian National Congress and after independence, he joined Swatantra Party. Munshi held several important posts like member of Constituent Assembly of India, minister of agriculture and food of India, and governor of Uttar Pradesh. Ibrahim Munshi
Mohammad Ibrahim Soomro by his pen name Ibrahim Munshi ) was a Sindhi-language poet and writer. He was born on January 15, 1934, in Janhan Soomro جنھاڻ سومرو, Tando Muhammad Khan, Hyderabad District, Sindh. He wrote seven books of poetry. He died on 31 July 2003. Education When Munshi was 9 years old, at the time of his primary education, his father died. All of his family’s responsibilities fell upon him as he was teenager. He gained primary education in his village. Due to this responsibility he stopped education at primary level, could not proceed for higher education and left his study and toiled hard for earning. Harendranath Munshi
Harendranath Munshi ( Bengali: হরেন্দ্রনাথ মুন্সী, 1914- 30 January, 1938) was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter involved in the Indian independence movement during 1930s. Background Munshi was born in 1914. He was a member of the Chaugachha zamindar family of erstwhile Jessore in British India (present day Bangladesh). Revolutionary activities As a revolutionary, Munshi was active in ample revolutionary activities. In 1934, he was sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment in the inter-provincial conspiracy case and he was first transferred to Diamond Harbour and later to Dhaka Central Jail. In the Dhaka Central Jail he started fatal hunger strike since 21 January, 1938, to exhibit his protest against inhuman treatments with the political prisoners and their classification as criminals. Bubu Eklund (''née'' Munshi, born: 11 March 1951) is an Indian-born Swedish singer and exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. She is based in Lund and leads the ''Lund International Tagore Choir'' with her husband Lars Eklund, which is involved in popularising Rabindra Sangeet and the ideologies of Rabindranath Tagore in Sweden. Munshi Ram (19 December 1906 – 29 June 1998), Indian spiritual guru and follower of Faqir Chand. Early life He was born in Meghwal family at village Sundernagar at Sialkot, Punjab (now in Pakistan) in the year 1906.
