A Moviola () is a device that allows a Film editing, film editor to view a film while editing. It was the first machine for motion picture editing when it was invented by Iwan Serrurier in 1924. History Iwan Serrurier's original 1917 concept for the Moviola was as a home movie projector to be sold to the general public. The name was derived from the name "Victrola" since Serrurier thought his invention would do for home movie viewing what the Victrola did for home music listening. However, since the machine cost $600 in 1920 (), very few sold. An editor at Douglas Fairbanks Film Corporation, Douglas Fairbanks Studios suggested that Iwan should adapt the device for use by film editors. Iwan Serrurier
Iwan Serrurier (September 21, 1878 – 1953) was a Dutch-American electrical engineer notable for inventing the Moviola. Career Iwan was born in Leiden, Netherlands to Lindor Serrurier, director of the city's ethnographic museum, and Martina Lindo. In June 1903, Serrurier married Catharina Damme in Utrecht. Soon after, they moved to the United States and settled in Pasadena, California, where their son Mark was born in May 1904. Serrurier sold real estate and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a draftsman. In 1917 Serrurier designed a home movie projector, which he called the "Moviola", since he envisioned it being used in households similarly to the Victrola home phonograph. However, the Moviola's $600 price point (equivalent to $10,400 in 2023) meant few sold when it was first marketed in 1923. ''Her Name Was Moviola'' is a 2024 English documentary film written by Walter Murch, produced and directed by Howard Berry. It stars Murch and Dan Farrell, with an appearance by Mike Leigh. Plot Beginning with an explanation of the intended film recreation before the separate 35mm picture and mag stripe audio reels arrive, Dan Farrell as assistant editor, proceeds to synch the rushes together, before they are screened to Murch on a Steenbeck at the Stanley Kubrick estate. Returning back to the cutting room, Farrell adds edge numbers to both the picture and audio on an Acmade numbering machine and then, breaks the reels into individual shots. A flatbed editor is a type of machine used to edit Film stock, film for a motion picture. Picture and sound rolls are placed onto separate motorized disks, called "plates," and then threaded through picture and sound transports, each of which has sprocket rollers that transport the film or magnetic stock forwards or backwards at variable or fixed speeds while maintaining their precise positions. The transports can be "locked" together, either mechanically (KEM, Steenbeck, Showchron) or electronically (Moviola), so that they move in harmony and maintain synchronization between picture and sound. Film editing is both a creative and a technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking. Walter Murch
Walter Scott Murch (born July 12, 1943) is an American film editor, director, writer and sound designer. His work includes '' THX 1138'', ''Apocalypse Now'', '' The Godfather I'', '' II'', and '' III'', '' American Graffiti'', '' The Conversation'', ''Ghost'' and '' The English Patient'', with three Academy Award wins (from nine nominations: six for picture editing and three for sound mixing). For his work on ''Apocalypse Now'', Murch was the first person to receive a credit as "Sound Designer." Murch was also the editor and re-recording mixer of '' Apocalypse Now Redux''. Mark Serrurier
Mark Serrurier (12 May 1904 in Pasadena, California – 14 February 1988) is the son of Dutch-born electrical engineer, Iwan Serrurier, who created the Moviola in 1924 which became the technology used for film editing. Mark was a graduate of Caltech and went on to work on designs for the Palomar Observatory 200 inch (5 m) Hale Telescope. The pioneering truss design he invented for that instrument's massive tube structure (the " Serrurier truss") is still used today in large telescope designs. During World War II, Mark worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory testing jet aircraft engines.
