Many-valued Logics
Many-valued logic (also multi- or multiple-valued logic) is a propositional calculus in which there are more than two truth values. Traditionally, in Aristotle's logical calculus, there were only two possible values (i.e., "true" and "false") for any proposition. Classical two-valued logic may be extended to ''n''-valued logic for ''n'' greater than 2. Those most popular in the literature are three-valued (e.g., Łukasiewicz's and Kleene's, which accept the values "true", "false", and "unknown"), four-valued, nine-valued, the finite-valued (finitely-many valued) with more than three values, and the infinite-valued (infinitely-many-valued), such as fuzzy logic and probability logic. Propositional Calculus
The propositional calculus is a branch of logic. It is also called propositional logic, statement logic, sentential calculus, sentential logic, or sometimes zeroth-order logic. Sometimes, it is called ''first-order'' propositional logic to contrast it with System F, but it should not be confused with first-order logic. It deals with propositions (which can be Truth value, true or false) and relations between propositions, including the construction of arguments based on them. Compound propositions are formed by connecting propositions by logical connectives representing the truth functions of Logical conjunction, conjunction, Logical disjunction, disjunction, Material conditional, implication, Logical biconditional, biconditional, and negation. Law Of Excluded Middle
In logic, the law of excluded middle or the principle of excluded middle states that for every proposition, either this proposition or its negation is true. It is one of the three laws of thought, along with the law of noncontradiction and the law of identity; however, no system of logic is built on just these laws, and none of these laws provides inference rules, such as modus ponens or De Morgan's laws. The law is also known as the law/principle of the excluded third, in Latin ''principium tertii exclusi''. Another Latin designation for this law is ''tertium non datur'' or "no third ossibilityis given". In classical logic, the law is a tautology. In contemporary logic the principle is distinguished from the semantical principle of bivalence, which states that every proposition is either true or false. Logical Conjunction
In logic, mathematics and linguistics, ''and'' (\wedge) is the Truth function, truth-functional operator of conjunction or logical conjunction. The logical connective of this operator is typically represented as \wedge or \& or K (prefix) or \times or \cdot in which \wedge is the most modern and widely used. The ''and'' of a set of operands is true if and only if ''all'' of its operands are true, i.e., A \land B is true if and only if A is true and B is true. An operand of a conjunction is a conjunct. Negation
In logic, negation, also called the logical not or logical complement, is an operation (mathematics), operation that takes a Proposition (mathematics), proposition P to another proposition "not P", written \neg P, \mathord P, P^\prime or \overline. It is interpreted intuitively as being true when P is false, and false when P is true. For example, if P is "Spot runs", then "not P" is "Spot does not run". An operand of a negation is called a ''negand'' or ''negatum''. Negation is a unary operation, unary logical connective. It may furthermore be applied not only to propositions, but also to notion (philosophy), notions, truth values, or interpretation (logic), semantic values more generally. In classical logic, negation is normally identified with the truth function that takes ''truth'' to ''falsity'' (and vice versa). Graham Priest
Graham Priest (born 1948) is a philosopher and logician who is distinguished professor of philosophy at the CUNY Graduate Center, as well as a regular visitor at the University of Melbourne, where he was Boyce Gibson Professor of Philosophy and also at the University of St Andrews. Life Priest was educated at St John's College, Cambridge and the London School of Economics. His thesis advisor was John Lane Bell. He also holds a DLitt from the University of Melbourne. Priest was elected a corresponding fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1995. In addition to his work in philosophy and logic, Priest practised karate-do. Gödel Logic
In mathematical logic, a Gödel logic, sometimes referred to as Dummett logic or Gödel–Dummett logic, is a member of a family of finite- or infinite-valued logics in which the sets of truth values ''V'' are closed subsets of the unit interval ,1containing both 0 and 1. Different such sets ''V'' in general determine different Gödel logics. The concept is named after Kurt Gödel. Intuitionistic Logic
Intuitionistic logic, sometimes more generally called constructive logic, refers to systems of symbolic logic that differ from the systems used for classical logic by more closely mirroring the notion of constructive proof. In particular, systems of intuitionistic logic do not assume the law of excluded middle and double negation elimination, which are fundamental inference rules in classical logic. Formalized intuitionistic logic was originally developed by Arend Heyting to provide a formal basis for L. E. J. Brouwer's programme of intuitionism. From a proof-theoretic perspective, Heyting’s calculus is a restriction of classical logic in which the law of excluded middle and double negation elimination have been removed. Kurt Friedrich Gödel ( ; ; April 28, 1906 – January 14, 1978) was a logician, mathematician, and philosopher. Hans Reichenbach
Hans Reichenbach (; ; September 26, 1891 – April 9, 1953) was a leading philosopher of science, educator, and proponent of logical empiricism. He was influential in the areas of science, education, and of logical empiricism. He founded the ''Gesellschaft für empirische Philosophie'' (Society for Empirical Philosophy) in Berlin in 1928, also known as the " Berlin Circle".
