A department store is a retail establishment offering a wide range of consumer goods in different areas of the store, each area ("department") specializing in a product category. In modern major cities, the department store made a dramatic appearance in the middle of the 19th century, and permanently reshaped shopping habits, and the definition of service and luxury. Similar developments were under way in London (with Whiteleys), in Paris ( Le Bon Marché) and in New York ( Stewart's). Today, departments often include the following: clothing, cosmetics, do it yourself, furniture, gardening, hardware, home appliances, houseware, paint, sporting goods, toiletries, and toys. Edcon Limited was a retail company based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Its subsidiaries included Edgars, a department store with 203 branches. In 2020, the Competition Tribunal approved the sale of the Edgars division to Retailability (pty) Ltd, and Jet to The Foschini Group. History Edcon Ltd was the leading clothing, footwear and textiles (CFT) retailing group in South Africa trading through a range of retail formats. The first Edgars store was opened on 6 September 1929 in Joubert Street, Johannesburg by Eli Ross. It was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1949 and opened its first stores outside of South Africa in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (now Eswatini) in 1966-69. Hudson's Bay (french: La Baie d'Hudson), known colloquially and operating online as The Bay (French: ), is a Canadian luxury goods department store chain. It is the flagship brand of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the oldest and longest-surviving company in North America as well as one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the world. Founded on 2 May 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company opened its first department store in 1881 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The chain operated under the company name before being rebranded to The Bay in 1965. Holt Renfrew Ogilvy, formerly and still colloquially Ogilvy (french: La Maison Ogilvy), is a Canadian department store located on Saint Catherine Street West in the downtown core of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It has been owned by the Selfridges Group, which itself is owned by British-Canadian businessman Galen Weston, since 2011. Through this ownership, it is affiliated with the Canadian department store Holt Renfrew and the European department stores Arnotts, Brown Thomas, de Bijenkorf, and Selfridges. Holt, Renfrew & Co., Limited (doing business as Holt Renfrew and known colloquially as Holt's) is a Canadian luxury department store chain founded in 1837 by William S. Henderson. It has been owned by the Weston family since 1986, and was previously affiliated with the department stores Selfridges, Brown Thomas, and de Bijenkorf until the Weston family divested of the Selfridges Group in 2022. Hart stores is based in the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario. FIELDS Stores Ltd. is a Canadian discount store company owned by FHC Holdings, with 63 locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories.
