Alice Emma Ives (1876–1930) was an American dramatist and journalist. A native of Detroit, at an early age, she wrote for the newspapers. She was "one of the more prolific women playwrights of the Victorian era". She had considerable success as a writer of verse and short stories, also as a dramatic and art critic. Her stories, written for New York City and Detroit papers, were quite extensively copied. One which appeared in the ''Detroit Free Fress'' enjoyed the rounds of different journals, and reached as far as New Zealand. Her verses appeared in ''Our Continent'' and the ''New York Sunday Mercury''. Early life and education Alice Emma Ives was born in Detroit, Michigan, 1876, where she lived until September, 1890, when she moved with her mother to New York City. George Cecil Ives (1 October 1867 in Frankfurt, Germany – 4 June 1950 in Hampstead/Middlesex, Great Britain) was an English poet, writer, penal reformer and early homosexual law reform campaigner. Life and career Ives was the illegitimate son of Gordon Maynard Ives (1837–1907), an English army officer, and Jane Violet Tyler (1846–1936). He was brought up by his paternal grandmother, Emma Ives, with whom he lived between Bentworth in Hampshire and the South of France. Ives met his birth mother only twice and had a fraught relationship with his father. Ives was educated at home and at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he started to amass 45 volumes of scrapbooks (between 1892 and 1949). Norman Seaton Ives (1923–1978) was an American artist, graphic designer, educator, and fine art publisher. He co-founded Ives-Sillman, Inc. alongside Sewell Sillman, which published silkscreen prints and photographs in monographic art portfolios. Biography Norman Seaton Ives was born March 23, 1923 in the Panama Canal Zone, to parents Florence Nelson Ives and Capt. Norman Seaton Ives. His father was a career naval officer for the United States. He was married to Constance Taffinder, and they had four sons. Ives attended Wesleyan University (1950), and Yale University (1952). Joseph Christmas Ives (25 December 1829 – 12 November 1868) was an American soldier, botanist, and an explorer of the Colorado River in 1858. Biography Ives was born in New York City on Christmas Day, 1829. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1848 and received his M.A. in 1851. At Bowdoin, he was a member of the Athenaean Society. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1852. As a Second lieutenant from 1853 to 1854 he was appointed by the U.S. Army to the Topographical Engineers as assistant to Lt. Amiel Weeks Whipple in the Pacific Railroad survey along the 35th parallel. From 1857 to 1858 Ives commanded an expedition to explore up the Colorado River from its mouth. He designed, built and tested his own stern-wheel steamboat, then shipped it to the Colorado River Delta. He oversaw the business and financial side of the firm, Currier and Ives, which he co-managed with his business partner, Nathaniel Currier. Biography Ives was born on March 5, 1824 in New York City, New York. His father worked as the superintendent of Bellevue Hospital in New York City. A self-trained artist, Ives's art education included visits to art galleries and the Astor Library. Although he went to work at the age of 12, he continued his art education on his own.
