International Draughts
International draughts (also called international checkers or Polish draughts) is a Abstract strategy, strategy board game for two players, one of the variants of draughts. The gameboard comprises 10×10 squares in alternating dark and light colours, of which only the 50 dark squares are used. Each player has 20 pieces, light for one player and dark for the other, at opposite sides of the board. In conventional diagrams, the board is displayed with the light pieces at the bottom; in this orientation, the lower-left corner square must be dark. History According to Dutch Draughts historians, draughts historian Arie van der Stoep, it is unknown where the 10×10 square draughts board first came into use. In the Netherlands, the board was probably used from 1550, and the number of pieces was extended to 2×20 between 1650 and 1700. Maurice Raichenbach
Maurice Raichenbach (born near Warsaw, Poland on May 12, 1915; died in Hauts-de-Seine, France on March 1, 1998) was a Polish-born French draughts champion. His early childhood was spent in the area around Warsaw, but when he was a boy his mother died and his father moved them to France. He started at age 10 and at 14 was the champion of "Seine draughts club." At eighteen he became Draughts World Championship, which made him the youngest world champion at International draughts up to that point in history and one of the youngest ever. Hence he was sometimes referred to as "The Mozart of the Checkerboard." He retained the title until 1938. Viktoriya Motrichko
Viktoriya Leontyivna Motrichko (; born in Odesa, Ukrainian SSR) is a Ukrainian draughts player, an International Grandmaster since 2005. She was the World champion in International draughts in 2023, World champion in Brazilian draughts in 2007 and the winner of the World Mind Sports Games in Russian checkers in 2008. Junior career Viktoriya Motrichko started playing draughts at the age of 10 and currently specializes in draughts-64 (Russian and Brazilian versions). In these two variants she won numerous World and European junior championships starting 2002 when she became World and European champion among mini-cadets. Elena Mikhailovskaya
Elena Konstantinovna Mikhailovskaya (; November 21, 1949, Moscow, USSR – February 4, 1995, Moscow, Russia) was the first female World champion in international draughts. She won this title five times in a row (1973–1977). Before that she was four-time champion of the Soviet Union in Russian checkers (1969–1972). Later she was coaching and heading the Moscow draughts federation. Biography As a child, Elena Mikhailovskaya was enjoying active sports, but at the age of 15 health issues forced her to settle down. She intended to start playing chess seriously but ended up in a draughts club. In about a year she won a personal-team youth championship of the Soviet Union with the Moscow team, and in 1968 she won the individual championship as well. The Draughts World Championship is the world championship in international draughts, since 1973 organised among women by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD). Since 1981 the championship occurs every two years. In the even year following the tournament must take place the World Title match. The first began in 1973 in the Netherlands and has had winners from the Soviet Union, Latvia, Ukraine, and Russia. The World Draughts Federation (''Fédération Mondiale du Jeu de Dames'') FMJD, is the international body uniting national draughts federations. It was founded in 1947 by four Federations: France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Members Currently, the FMJD has more than 70 national federation members in 2021. Recently the FMJD has become a member of the Global Association of International Sports Federations and strives for Olympic recognition. Iser Kuperman
Iser Kuperman, sometimes spelled Koeperman, (; April 21, 1922 - March 6, 2006) was a player of international draughts from the USSR, modern-day Ukraine. He had been the seven-time world champion, the four-time Panamerican champion, and multiple USSR champion in international and Russian draughts. He was also an International Grandmaster. Career Iser Kuperman was born in Habne, Ukrainian SSR (now Poliske, Kiev Oblast) near Chernobyl on April 21, 1922 to a Jewish family. His family moved to Kyiv when he was a baby. In 1945, he made his debut in the USSR Russian draughts championship and won first place. After that, Kuperman took first place three times. At the age of 30, he began to play in international draughts and was USSR champion five times. Iser Kuperman was world champion in 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1974.
