Imaginary Audience
The imaginary audience refers to a psychological state where an individual imagines and believes that multitudes of people are listening to or watching them. It is one of the mental constructs in David Elkind's idea of adolescent egocentrism (along with the personal fable). Though the term refers to an experience exhibited in young adolescence as part of development, people of any age may harbor a fantasy of an imaginary audience. Schema (psychology)
In psychology and cognitive science, a schema (: schemata or schemas) describes a pattern of thought or behavior that organizes categories of information and the relationships among them. It can also be described as a mental structure of preconceived ideas, a framework representing some aspect of the world, or a system of organizing and perceiving new information, such as a mental schema or conceptual model. David Elkind
David Elkind (born March 11, 1931) is an American child psychologist and author. Life Elkind and his family relocated to California when he was a teenager. He studied at the University of California at Los Angeles and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952 and Doctorate in Philosophy in 1955. David also earned an honorary Doctorate in Science at the Rhode Island College in 1987. A professor at Tufts University, his books — ''The Hurried Child'', ''The Power of Play'' and ''Miseducation'' — informed early childhood education professionals of the possible dangers of incorporating elementary school curriculum into the very early years of a child's life. Adolescent Egocentrism
Adolescent egocentrism is a term that child psychologist David Elkind used to describe the phenomenon of adolescents' inability to distinguish between their perception of what others think about them and what people actually think in reality. Elkind's theory on adolescent egocentrism is drawn from Piaget's theory on cognitive developmental stages, which argues that formal operations enable adolescents to construct imaginary situations and abstract thinking. Accordingly, adolescents are able to conceptualize their own thoughts and conceive of others perception of their self-image. Personal Fable
According to Alberts, Elkind, and Ginsberg the personal fable "is the corollary to the imaginary audience. Thinking of themselves as the center of attention, the adolescent comes to believe that it is because they are special and unique.” It is found during the formal operational stage in Piagetian theory, along with the imaginary audience. The spotlight effect is the psychological phenomenon by which people tend to Theory of mind, believe they are being noticed more than they really are. Being that one is constantly in the center of Self-concept, one's own world, an ''accurate'' evaluation of how much one is noticed by others is uncommon. Conformity or conformism is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to social group, group norms, politics or being like-minded.
