History Of Asian Americans
Asian American history is the history of ethnic and racial groups in the United States who are of Asian descent. The term "Asian Americans, Asian American" was an idea invented in the 1960s to bring together Chinese Americans, Chinese, Japanese Americans, Japanese, and Filipino Americans for strategic political purposes. Soon other groups of Asian origin, such as Korean Americans, Korean, Indian Americans, Indian, and Vietnamese Americans were added. For example, while many Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants arrived as unskilled workers in significant numbers from 1850 to 1905 and largely settled in Hawaii and California, many Vietnamese, Cambodian Americans, Cambodian, and Hmong Americans arrived in the United States as refugees following the Vietnam War. Asian Americans
Asian Americans are Americans with Asian diaspora, ancestry from the continent of Asia (including naturalized Americans who are Immigration to the United States, immigrants from specific regions in Asia and descendants of those immigrants). Although this term had historically been used for all the indigenous peoples of the continent of Asia, the usage of the term "Asian" by the United States Census Bureau denotes a racial category that includes people with origins or ancestry from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia. It excludes people with ethnic origins from West Asia, who were historically classified as 'white' and will be categorized as Middle Eastern Americans starting from the 2030 United States census, 2030 census. Chinatown
Chinatown ( zh, t=唐人街) is the catch-all name for an ethnic enclave of Chinese people located outside Greater China, most often in an urban setting. Areas known as "Chinatown" exist throughout the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The development of most Chinatowns typically resulted from human migration to an area without any or with few Chinese residents. Binondo in Manila, established in 1594, is recognized as the world's oldest Chinatown. Notable early examples outside Asia include San Francisco's Chinatown in the United States and Melbourne's Chinatown in Australia, which were founded in the early 1850s during the California and Victoria gold rushes, respectively. A more modern example, in Montville, Connecticut, was caused by the displacement of Chinese workers in New York's Manhattan Chinatown following the September 11th attacks in 2001. Morro Bay, California
Morro Bay (''Morro'', Spanish for "Hill") is a seaside city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. Located on the Central Coast of California, the city's population was 10,757 as of the 2020 census, up from 10,234 at the 2010 census. The town overlooks Morro Bay, a natural embayment with an all-weather, small-craft, commercial and recreational harbor. History The prehistory of Morro Bay relates to Chumash settlement, particularly near the mouth of Morro Creek. At least as early as the Millingstone Horizon thousands of years before present, an extensive settlement existed along the banks and terraces above Morro Creek. Landing Of The First Filipinos
On 18 October 1587, the first Filipinos landed in what is now the Continental United States at Morro Bay. They arrived aboard the ''Nuestra Señora de Buena Esperanza'', which had sailed from Portuguese Macau, as part of the Manila galleon trade. During about three days of travels ashore around Morro Bay, the crew of the ''Nuestra Señora de Buena Esperanza'' came in contact with the Chumash people, ultimately resulting in the deaths of two crew members: one Spaniards, Spaniard and one Filipino people, Filipino. Departing Morro Bay after the deaths of the crew members, the ''Nuestra Señora de Buena Esperanza'' eventually reached its intended destination of Acapulco. Yellow Peril
The Yellow Peril (also the Yellow Terror, the Yellow Menace, and the Yellow Specter) is a Racism, racist color terminology for race, color metaphor that depicts the peoples of East Asia, East and Southeast Asia as an existential danger to the Western world. Honouliuli National Historic Site
Honouliuli National Historic Site is near Waipahu on the island of Oahu, in the U.S. state of Hawaii; it is the location of the Honouliuli Internment Camp, Hawaiʻi's largest and longest-operating Japanese internment camp, which opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. The site was designated a national monument on February 24, 2015, by President Barack Obama. The John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, signed March 12, 2019, redesignated it as Honouliui National Historic Site. The internment camp held 320 internees. In Hawaii, where more than 150,000 Japanese Americans comprised more than one-third of the territory's population, only 1,200 to 1,800 were incarcerated. Alexander Saxton
Alexander Plaisted Saxton (July 16, 1919 – August 20, 2012) was an American historian, novelist, and university professor. He was the author of the pioneering '' Indispensable Enemy'' (1975), one of the founding texts in Asian American studies. Life and works Saxton was one of two children born to Eugene and Martha Saxton, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. His older brother was the author Mark Saxton (1914–1988). His father became the editor in chief of Harper & Brothers, and his mother taught literature at a private girls' school in Manhattan. Saxton was raised on the East Side of Manhattan; his parents were known to have famous writers over for dinner such as Thornton Wilder and Aldous Huxley.
