Grietenij
A ''grietenij'' was a forerunner to the '' gemeente'' or municipality in Frisia, particularly in Friesland, and also in Groningen which are now a part of the Netherlands. From the end of the 16th century until 1851, there were a total of 30 ''grietenijen'' in Friesland. The term ''grietenij'' means the administrative district of a '' grietman''. The term ''grietman'' means a man who greets. The ''grietenijen'' were found in the counties of Oostergo, Westergo and Zevenwouden. In the municipality law in 1851, the term ''grietenij'' was changed to gemeente or municipality, and the term ''grietman'' was changed to ''burgemeester'' or mayor. This resulted in consistent terms being used throughout the Netherlands. Grietman
A grietman (from Old Frisian ''greta'' to accuse, to summon) is partly a forerunner of the current rural mayor in the province of Friesland, and partly the forerunner of a judge. The area of jurisdiction was the municipality or gemeente. In the judge function, the concept was also found in the Western side of the province of Groningen. The grietman and judges were responsible for the administration and justice in the Frisian grietenij. Achtkarspelen
Achtkarspelen () is a municipality in Friesland in the northern Netherlands. History The name ''Achtkarspelen'', literally meaning "eight parishes", is derived from the original eight parishes within the ''grietenij'', namely: Augustinusga, Buitenpost (the capital), Drogeham, De Kooten, Kortwoude, Lutkepost, Surhuizum and Twijzel. Achtkarspelen held a separate status within Friesland for many years. In the Middle Ages Achtkarspelen fell under the Bishopric of Münster, meanwhile the rest of Friesland was a part of the Bishopric of Utrecht. The ''grietenij'' Achtkarspelen became a municipality in 1851 as a result of the Municipality Act of Minister of the Interior Johan Rudolph Thorbecke. Dantumadeel
Dantumadiel () is a municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Dantumadiel is a rural municipality characterized by economic activity and agriculture. History The first time Dantumadiel is mentioned was in a document from 1242. At that time Dantumadiel, or ''Donthmadeil'' as it was then known, was a part of the Winninghe district, the northern part of Oostergo. Oostergo
Eastergoa (also Ostergau, Ostergo, or Oostergo) was one of the seven areas and one of the three '' Gaue'' within what is today the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Area On its west side Eastergoa was bordered by the Middelsee with Westergoa on the other side of the water. To the south the Alde Leppedyk and the Boarn were the border with , and later with ( nl, Zeuvenwoolden). Westergo
Westergoa was one of the seven sealands and one of the three that now lie within the borders of today's Dutch province of Friesland. Later it was one of the three goaen of Frisia. In the Middle Ages Westergoa most probably formed the political centre of the Frisian realm. Area On the eastern side Westergoa was bordered by the Middelsee, on the other side Eastergoa. On the south side it bordered with what originally was Bornegoa which was in the line with Terhernster Lake to the south of the coast, the eastern perimeter was with Doedingwerstal. Noordwolde, Friesland
Noordwolde ( fry, Noardwâlde) is a village in Weststellingwerf in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 3,600 as of 2017. , the settlement to the south of Noordwolde is considered a separate village. There is a restored windmill in the village, ''Windlust''. The National Museum of Weaving is located in the village. There is a natural lake, the Spokedam, which is partly surrounded by a beach, on the outskirts of Noordwolde.
