First Senate Of Puerto Rico
The First Puerto Rican Senate, under United States occupation, was the first meeting of senators of the Senate of Puerto Rico elected as part of the legislative branch of their government. Elections for the Senate of Puerto Rico were authorized by passage of the Jones-Shafroth Act in 1917. It authorized elections to be held on July 6, 1917 for representative government in the legislature. The Senate met from August 13, 1917, to January 2, 1920. Senate
A senate is a deliberative assembly, often the upper house or chamber of a bicameral legislature. The name comes from the ancient Roman Senate (Latin: ''Senatus''), so-called as an assembly of the senior (Latin: ''senex'' meaning "the elder" or "old man") and therefore considered wiser and more experienced members of the society or ruling class. Puerto Rico Senatorial District VI, also known as the Senatorial District of Guayama, is one of the eight senatorial districts of Puerto Rico. Juan Cortada Tirado
Juan Enrique Cortada Tirado (1864—1937) was a Puerto Rican politician, businessman, and landowner. He served as a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1917 to 1920. Early years and studies Juan Cortada Tirado was born in 1864 to Juan Cortada y Quintana who was the 76th Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico and Mercedes Tirado Y Hinsch. He had a younger brother called Eduardo. Professional career From an early age, Cortada worked at his father's estate. Some sources say that his father ceded the ownership of the Hacienda Descalabrado to him and his brother in 1871, but never registered it. In 1887, Cortada was arrested in Santa Isabel on orders of General Romualdo Palacios for conspiring against the Spanish Government. After his release, he and his brother assumed ownership of Hacienda Descalabrado, which then became Central Cortada. José Tous Soto (October 2, 1874 – March 22, 1933) was a Puerto Rican politician and former Senator and Representative. Early years and education José Tous Soto was born in San Lorenzo on October 2, 1874. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Oviedo in Spain. Political career Party alliance Tous began his political career with the Liberal Fusionist Party, led by Luis Muñoz Rivera. He then joined the Republican Party. Juan García Ducós
Juan García Ducós was a Puerto Rican politician and senator. García Ducós was a member of the Puerto Rico House of Delegates during the early 1900s. In 1917, García Ducós was elected as a member of the first Puerto Rican Senate established by the Jones-Shafroth Act. He represented the District III (Aguadilla). García Ducós was reelected at the 1920 general elections. After that, like most of his fellow party members, he joined Alianza Puertorriqueña, a joint political venture with the Republican Party.
