Bocage's African Fat Mouse
Bocage's African fat mouse (''Steatomys bocagei'') is an extant species of rodent indigenous to Angola, the Republic of the Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Given the distribution of the species across the Angolan Plateau and south-west of the DRC throughout central Africa, the probability of a 'large population', and the security of its habitat, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recognises ''S. bocagei'' as stable. Whereas taxonomies early in the twentieth century posit ''S. bocagei'' as a species, more contemporary records from 1977 onwards identify it as indistinguishable from ''S. pratensis''. In 1998, however, Crawford-Cabral proposed that the additional pair of teats in ''S. bocagei'' required separation from ''S. pratensis''. Subsequent to Crawford-Cabral's publication, Wilson and Reader maintain in ''Mammal Species of the World ''Mammal Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference'' is a standard reference work ... Rodent Genera

About 40% of all mammal species are rodents. They are native to all major land masses except for Antarctica, and several oceanic islands, though they have subsequently been introduced to most of these land masses by human activity. Rodents are extremely diverse in their ecology and lifestyles and can be found in almost every terrestrial habitat, including human-made environments. Species can be arboreal, fossorial (burrowing), saltatorial/ricochetal (leaping on their hind legs), or semiaquatic. However, all rodents shar ... Tiny Fat Mouse
The tiny fat mouse (''Steatomys parvus'') is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland. It favours sandy and cultivated areas, rocky hills, open woodland and grassy plains. The depth of its burrow varies between a minimum of 40 cm and one metre; the burrow contains few passageways, with a central chamber filled with fibers and grass. Ecology The tiny fat mouse is part of an assemblage of small mammals in open ''Acacia'' woodland. The most abundant rodent in this habitat is the African grass rat (''Arvicanthis niloticus''), followed by the Natal multimammate mouse (''Mastomys natalensis''). The shrews ''Crocidura'' spp. were also abundant as were the fat mice (''Steatomys'' spp.), Gerbils (''Gerbilliscus'' spp.), tree mice (''Dendromus'' ... Dainty Fat Mouse
The dainty fat mouse (''Steatomys cuppedius'') is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It is found in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry shrubland. Description The dainty fat mouse has a head-and-body length of between and a tail length of between . It weighs between . It is a light sandy-brown colour and always has eight nipples. It is one of three species of fat mouse occurring in West Africa. It can be distinguished from the northwestern fat mouse (''Steatomys caurinus'') by being smaller and paler, by having a relatively longer tail, which is always at least half the head-and-body length, and by having fewer nipples. The third species, Jackson's fat mouse (''Steatomys jacksoni''), does not share the same range, being found only in southern Ghana and southern Nigeria, and has twelve nipples. Northwestern Fat Mouse
The northwestern fat mouse (''Steatomys caurinus'') is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It is native to tropical West Africa where it occurs on grassland and crop land. Taxonomy The northwestern fat mouse was first described as ''Steatomys caurinus'' by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas in 1912. Coatzee considered it, in 1977, to be a subspecies of the fat mouse (''Steatomys pratensis''), but Swanepoel and Schlitter elevated it to full species rank in 1978. Description The northwestern fat mouse has a head-and-body length of between and a tail length of between . It weighs between . It is a dark reddish-brown colour and always has ten or more nipples. It is one of three species of fat mouse occurring in West Africa. It can be distinguished from the dainty fat mouse (''Steatomys caurinus'') by being larger and darker, by having a shorter tail and by having more nipples. Nesomyidae
The Nesomyidae are a family (biology), family of African rodents in the large and complex superfamily Muroidea. It includes several subfamilies, all of which are native to either continental Africa or to Madagascar. Included in this family are Nesomyinae, Malagasy rodents, Dendromurinae, climbing mice, Petromyscus, African rock mice, Delanymys, swamp mice, Cricetomyinae, pouched rats, and the Mystromys albicaudatus, white-tailed rat. Characteristics Nesomyids are small- to medium-sized rodents, with the largest being the size of a rat. Physically, they may resemble mouse, mice, rats, voles, or hamsters, depending on the species and subfamily. Their diets vary from fairly strict herbivore, herbivory to nearly pure insectivore, insectivory. Their habits are similarly variable, with some species climbing trees, and others burrowing in the ground. They give birth to up to four young after a gestation period around six weeks. Classification Many of these animals were once thought t ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
