Europium Oxide
Europium oxide is a compound from the two elements europium and oxygen. Europium oxide may refer to: * Europium(II) oxide (europium monoxide, EuO) a magnetic semiconductor. * Europium(III) oxide (europium sesquioxide, Eu2O3), the most common oxide. {{Authority control Europium compounds ...

Europium(II) Oxide
Europium(II) oxide (EuO) is a chemical compound which is one of the oxides of europium. In addition to europium(II) oxide, there is also europium(III) oxide and the mixed valence europium(II,III) oxide. Preparation Europium(II) oxide can be prepared by the Redox, reduction of europium(III) oxide with elemental europium at 800 °C and subsequent vacuum distillation at 1150 °C. :Eu2O3 + Eu → 3 EuO It is also possible to synthesize from the reaction of europium oxychloride and lithium hydride. :2 EuOCl + 2 LiH → 2 EuO + 2 LiCl + H2 In modern research, thin films can be manufactured by molecular beam epitaxy directly from europium atoms and oxygen molecules. These films have contamination of Eu3+ of less than 1%. Properties Europium(II) oxide is a violet compound as a bulk crystal and transparent blue in thin film form. It is unstable in humid atmosphere, slowly turning into the yellow europium(II) hydroxide hydrrate and then to white europium(III) hydroxide. EuO crys ...

Magnetic Semiconductor
Magnetic semiconductors are semiconductor materials that exhibit both ferromagnetism (or a similar response) and useful semiconductor properties. If implemented in devices, these materials could provide a new type of control of conduction. Whereas traditional electronics are based on control of charge carriers ( n- or p-type), practical magnetic semiconductors would also allow control of quantum spin state (up or down). This would theoretically provide near-total spin polarization (as opposed to iron and other metals, which provide only ~50% polarization), which is an important property for spintronics applications, e.g. spin transistors. While many traditional magnetic materials, such as magnetite, are also semiconductors (magnetite is a semimetal semiconductor with bandgap 0.14 eV), materials scientists generally predict that magnetic semiconductors will only find widespread use if they are similar to well-developed semiconductor materials. To that end, dilute magnetic se ...

Europium(III) Oxide
Europium(III) oxide (Eu2O3), is a chemical compound of europium and oxygen. It is widely used as a red or blue phosphor in television sets and fluorescent lamps, and as an activator for yttrium-based phosphors. It is also an agent for the manufacture of fluorescent glass. Europium fluorescence is used in the anti-counterfeiting phosphors in Euro banknotes. Europium oxide has two common structures: Monoclinic ( mS30, space group ''C''2/''m'', No. 12) and cubic ( cI80, space group ''I''a, No. 206). The cubic structure is similar to that of manganese(III) oxide. It may be formed by ignition of europium Europium is a chemical element with the symbol Eu and atomic number 63. Europium is the most reactive lanthanide by far, having to be stored under an inert fluid to protect it from atmospheric oxygen or moisture. Europium is also the softest lan ... metal. It can react with acids to form the corresponding europium(III) salts. Gallery File:Tl2O3structure.jpg, Cubic Eu2O3 File:G ...
